You can't expect a station that's branded itself the relaxing music mix to suddenly start doing uptempo motown and disco shows...

I'd like to see artists like Sister Sledge, Earth Wind & Fire, Pointer Sisters, Donna Summer, Chaka Khan, Michael Zager Band, Cerrone, Narada Michael Walden and Shalamar added to the playlist.

There's 'relaxing' and there's 'comatose'

That was one of the things that blighted the station under GMG, especially in the early years. The playlist would lunge from something slow straight into an upbeat disco classic.

Completely agree 80sFan. I've just been listening to Smooth in the car on the way home for a change - no idea why - and after hearing the following 4 songs, I feel more than relaxed as I'm feeling suicidal: Air Supply - All Out Of Love; Bette Midler - Wind Beneath My Wings; Tymes - Ms Grace (which I actually like); and Carpenters - Please Mr. Postman. Come on Global, Smooth is utterly depressing! How the presenters stay awake for their 4 hour shows is beyond me.

Smooth must play that 'Wind Beneath My Wings' song so bloody often, Bette Midler will be able to take early retirement!

Sounds like 'more music variety' to me

Absolutely dire same old stuff on repeat. Thanks for posting I'm far from ready to listen again.
Abba, Elton and George presumably next. And this was tested of course.

The same can be applied to your posts even though you admitted you were "warming to Andrew Castle".

Hopefully as bad for Smooth as it is currently on the listeners. I live in hope that this dirge isn't working.

Give it a few hours. They'll be back round again!

It's a shame Smooth don't play 'Let's Go Round Again' as it sums up their playlist's repetition

Smooth Radio was gently playing to a room of 90 year olds in a nursing home I visited at the weekend. There were a dozen residents and only a couple were awake. Smooth was clearly doing it's job for them then.

Smooth Radio must save the NHS a fortune on sleeping pills!

I thought I was but I came to my senses I just can't listen to it. Smooth remains as boring as ever. I have moved onto Absolute after 10am after listening to my local for breakfast.

No you are wrong on Rajar, as Global and Rajar included Gold listeners (forced to Smooth when the regional stations changed name to make it a major UK station) with existing Smooth listeners, hense Gold total went down from 1363k to 772k and Smooth went up from a total of 3383k to 4311k.

There seems to be a lot of disgruntled ex Gold listeners.

Will be interesting to see if Smooth has gone down with listeners deserting it, or perhaps the promotion has added even more to Smooths total.

But you were right as Gold's listeners were not included in the last Smooth Q1 survey and the final total figures seemed to changed to reflect the name change at publication in March?

Well, i personally like Smooth radio. It serves a purpose. The other day i was doing a load of my book keeping (which i hate doing!) and i put smooth on in the background and really enjoyed the mix of laid back music and minimal chat. Didn't mind the adverts either. I was spot on for what i wanted at the time.

As someone who listened to Smooth north west as was from when it opened I would say 99% of the names you've listed WERE FORMALLY on their playlist and seemed to be quietly dropped when Global came in
I've christened the station Bland fm and if they get fifteen MINUTES of my time now that's a good week for them
And before anyone says If you're not listening why comment I return to the thread periodically in the hopes that maybe a miracle has happened but sadly in the words of Saint Diana of Ross I'm still Waiting 😢

Im afraid to say no doubt smooth radio listening figures will go up. As much as I hate to say it for some reason most people seem to like repetitive playlists. Gold in my opinion was the same apart from more lively it was the same songs over and over. Thats how global runs and for some reason the figures will show an increase in listeners as normal.

So what are you expecting a medal. Who actually cares if they go up or down it won't make me listen. Its Globals loss why should it bother those who dislike it. It could top the ratings but I won't listen unless it changes.

Well as they are actually not released until midnight you must be doing it with a crystal ball
And as someone has already said of course the figures will be up
Only by default though as the gold transmitters were flipped to duplicate the service
Wonder if you will be watching paint dry on Friday ???
