I have to say that I think it is good that a national commercial operator can still have two main studios. In a way similar to the BBC nationals seem to have (or have had) more than one centre.”
GMG only maintains London studios because it knows that experienced, big(ish) names won't travel to Manchester - especially if it's for a couple of shows a week. I actually think it's good that they've chosen Manchester as their main HQ. Obviously, it's the "spiritual" home of The Guardian, but it also demonstrates that you can run a national station without it being London-centric.
In fact, with a format like Smooth, it doesn't have to be "anything" centric. Taking this to a logical conclusion, you could forsee overseas franschising opportunities. maybe not quite as universal as Classic FM, maybe - but worth thinking about.
