The thing about Everybody Hurts is that it is a song you could identify with if you are going through a hard time and all the negative feelings that this creates. Sometimes the cause that leads to these feelings is love related and can follow falling out of love, someone falling out of love with you or unrequited love.

I would agree that it's perhaps not a love song in the vein of Endless Love but then again love isn’t all roses and flowers!

Why don't they call it Mellow Smooth lol

Maybe they could have extended the use of the name "Smooth Sanctuary" to take in the Chris Skinner presented and non stop music segments. Similar to the Mellow Magic umbrella.

Although "Love Songs" gives more or less an idea of what the music is about. Mellow Magic is a similar descriptive title.

Just put smooth on for 5 mins and to my disbelief everybody hurts was on again Jeez. Goodbye smooth and global your stations are just too bland and repetitive.

Radio Today predicts:

Quote:
“FEBRUARY

▪ Global rebrands Gold to Smooth Extra on AM in London, Manchester and the East Midlands”

Anybody think this prediction will come true?

Smooth Extra is now same as Smooth between 7pm and 10am. So basically, Smooth Extra is only 9 hours a day.

They are only trying to get people to listen to BBC Radio 6 Music or BBC Radio 2 instead.

I think if this was going to happen it would have happened at launch. You never know though.

On both the last 2 nights Love Songs has played Eternal Flame followed by You Make Me Feel Brand New. Great songs, but shows a lack of imagination from the producers

What do you expect this is Smooth the playlist these days is repetitive to say the least. That's why many on here find it so dreary and tedious.

You sound surprised, but this is Global radio remember!

I bet those songs will be on again before long. Plus the same old Whitney Houston, Abba and The Carpenters songs. More love songs variety!

I have dipped in to Magic a few times and although there are a few different songs the output is adult easy listening...exactly the same as Smooth.

so Smooth and Magic are chasing the same audience.

I would have thought that one of them would have gone for a updated gold type format;
classic rock, pop and soul with some modern songs and more lively and upbeat,

I don't want relaxing music all the time . ( I want to hear a bit of rock and roll and funky soul along with the soft music)

Maybe one of them will change over time to attract a wider audience more like a commercial radio 2 with more music and less chat?

Isn't that what GMG were going for when they had Smooth?
That didn't exactly set the Rajars on fire, did it?

Unless you count crashing and burning as setting on fire 😀

Before Smooth (in the east and west midlands) about 10years ago there was Saga radio, a bit like an old version (1980s?) radio 2 .
it had a large playlist and played easy listening and rock and roll.
since it changed to smooth they have gone for the soft and soul sound.

I am not saying Smooth should go back to Saga days, but I wish it would play some classic and modern rock and be a real alternative to Radio 2 .

Had a good listen to Magic today - much better music mix especially daytime and excellent new imaging. Smooth have lost me.

It's enough to make you weep to think what was once the brilliant Saga Radio has ended up as the appallingly lazy and dull station that is Smooth Radio.

I lived in the Midlands at the time and loved Saga. You could listen from morning to night and never hear the same clapped out predictable stuff.

Same here Magic beats Smooth hands down. Far better music playlist. New imaging knocks spots off the awful Smooth sweeper woman.

Saga and Primetime were what made me convert over to DAB in the first place. Bugger all worth listening to on that platform now.

The thing is though, didn't Smooth have it's roots in Jazz FM, if I remember correctly ?

So the emphasis on smooth soul is understandable.

I really enjoyed listening to Saga when in the Midlands musically it was much better than Smooth. Smooth is just depressing you really don't need laid back stuff during breakfast and drive.

What the hell is going on at Smooth? They played Jolene the other day instead of Islands in the stream! Did someone go down the car boot sale and buy a Dolly Parton CD - or what??

Sorry it's been a while, I'm missing Amara et al 😄
