I'm sorry but if we are talking Boney M then " gotta go home " is the one, not that any radio programmer today would know it, apart from

www.solidgoldgem.am.

... yes it is.

Well, it was the unexpectedness of it coming on that made it a pleasant surprise I suppose.

For informations sake it was 'Rivers Of Babylon'

They also played Norman Greenbaum.

If Magic really is playing Boney M and Norman Greenbaum I think they're in trouble. That's the kind of 'variety' the public hasn't gone for of late.

Bauer doesn't usually take that sort of risk, so perhaps they've tweaked their research and unexpected results have emerged.

I have just done some digging and found out the show I heard these songs on was called 'Number 1's of the 1970s' ........ so maybe it was a special show. Unless they do this type of thing every Saturday afternoon.

It made a nice change though.

Boney M made some great songs, Belfast right up there with their best but very rarely heard as is this one, one of my favourites

Did anyone else listen to Helen Knott covering the East Midlands drive home yesterday? I know all Smooth DJ's are dull but she whispers and you can never hear what she says. She does Sunday afternoons as well

just give this station up. presentation is dire music so repetitive the forum is far more entertaining.

Dave Brown is the only presenter on Smooth London worth listening to. Its a shame he is not on at a reasonable time.

I'm sure that tune is well known to even the youngest programmer after it's sampling on the Duck Sauce tune Barbra Streisand.

He he! Two words... Barbra Streisand

I forgot I really like 'Sunny' as well. They certainly did some classics!

I think there should be more Boney M on the radio in fact.

Smooth used to have a completely different playlist through the night to during the day, at the moment its improving again after for a while they just played the daytime tunes again

Magic played Livin La Vida Loca the other day, Smooth would never play that!

I miss Simon Bates. It would be a small consolation if Smooth brought back a Guess the Year feature between 9 and 10, and brought back 3 from 1 at 3. That kept me entertained all afternoon!

Well Gold play them both so they must have tested ok for Global so why not Bauer?
Neither would make me turn off but the constant playing of Build Me Up Buttercup and Dancing Queen on radio stations does.

Yeah, Heart and GEM 106 overplay those songs

In general terms Gold and Magic are aimed at different age and demographic groups - also Magic is slanted towards women and Gold, men.

Whenever anyone makes that last point people pile in and say 'I know loads of women who listen to Gold' but it's about how the station is aimed to deliver large numbers of the right listeners to the advertisers.

This is also why some songs by very famous artists are played and not others...I know a middle aged person who 'quite likes Elton John' but has never heard of Island Girl or Philadelphia Freedom, two of my favourites.

My point about research tweaking is if Magic is moving younger, as widely suggested in the business, it might also skew the music a bit more male, as men tend to tune around a bit more.

If you have a new story to tell, you'll probably get to tell it to the guys first.

Heart and Gem seem to be playing those songs a lot less than in the past though - in fact I would be surprised if Heart played Dancing Queen much at all outside of Club Classics thesedays.

Another cracking result for Smooth, particularly in the uber competitive London and North West markets. Well done to the whole team!

The Global bashers are strangely quiet today aren't they?

Would anyone who predicted the new Smooth would be a failure like to add anything to the discussion in the light of today's Rajar numbers?

I doubt the Smooth team are going to be too worried about that given the impressive performance of the network as a whole!
