The main improvement is in the number of people loving it. Yes yes we get that they're all mentally inferior to you. You're not Stephen Hawking posting under a pseudonym by any chance... If so why not give us a Brief History Of Successful Radio Formats?
![]() If not, you certainly should. You have a personality tailor made for it. |

Do you work in radio, by any chance?
If not, you certainly should. You have a personality tailor made for it. I assume by that you mean the kind of radio you don't like. No is the answer. Programming the Beeb stations is a relative piece of piss, but grinding a viable audience out of a carefully defined target....thats where the real thinking is at. |

Just to put the record straight I am not Stephen Hawkins. I am just an enthusiastic radio listener that doesn't want to hear the same few songs regurgitated day in day out. I have a love of music of many types from the mid 50's onwards and wish people like Richard Park wouldn't try to entertain me with the same few tracks all the time.
![]() I know you categorise Smooths listeners as kind of zombies but there are a lot of them, so possibly it boils down to one persons variety is another's purgatory. And if you're Richard Park, the game is to avoid the dodgy tracks through market research. It doesn't mean the songs are bad, just unacceptable to their target audience. As has been noted before, old Smooth was in intensive care until Global took it over. |

Yes, it must be SO hard making sure those dozen songs get juggled around, so they are not played at the same time everyday {thing is, your target audience wouldn't notice if they were] Also, having worked on both sides, I can assure you there are hard working, committed programmers at the BBC who have forgotten more than the clueless fools who cant make a decision without referring to a graph / data/ survey will ever know! |

I can think there's skill in programming BBC stations and commercial stations - it's just different skillsets. |

Well I am referring to the music stations . They get their generous funding whatever happens yet still stick to commercial approaches.
When they get their arses kicked as happened in London through the 70s and 80s and Manchester in the 90s there's always a spin about 'purposefully taking the audience younger, or not being there to compete with the commercial sector' I carefully used the word 'relative' and it's just my opinion, but if any of us had the chance to programme a commercial operation with performance vital to quarterly revenues or a subscription funded outfit with long spells between renewals and those events governed by vague politically motivated thinking, I know which one I would find easier. |

...having said that, keeping one eye on their capricious political paymasters while trying to keep themselves 'independent' must require certain non-radio skills and I doff my cap to them for that 😉

Well all I can say is then you must be THE most ardent fan of Smooth/Global's in your vehement defence of them, I wonder if they appreciate all your hard work!?
In case you haven't the time or inclination to look, I very much appreciate R4, in particular the political coverage and the two venerable panel shows. Some R2 when it's not too smug and a smidge of 6 when it's not trying too hard to please the Hoxtonistas. |

[quote=80sfan;77190109]I really hope they do. Mr Borsant spends a lot of time defending Smooth Radio on here. I may never see eye to eye with him, but I admire his dedication
[/QUOTEIt's Monsieur Borsant actually. Alain 😃 |

Smooth Extra is now from 10am to 06am. Only morning show (06-10am) from Smooth is on both stations.

It would be better if Global scrapped this Extra rubbish and put Gold back on DAB.

Smooth National Radio Thread
What i do think of global smooth radio is no good their is no real well known radio presenters on smooth radio now just dum down x gmtv presenters kate garraway she is not a radio presenter and that is true and andrew castle is no radio presenter and d.j. he is just a bbc tennis commentator and that is true and i do feel golbal radio should get this good top radio presenter terry wogan on to smooth radio now as a radio presenter on smooth radio that would be far more better now and get david jensen back on to smooth radio as well now but at ten pm till 2am i think smooth radio is a let down because they just broadcast this show smooth love songs with no presenter or d.j. and this show is broadcast on smooth extra as well at the same time what is the point 2 stations broadcasting the same show not good it would be far much better if global radio was broadcasting the wireless from age uk now and i am please to say the wireless from age uk got david hamilton on their station and david jensen as well un like smooth radio do now that is true smooth radio is dum down radio now that is true

I like Smooth extra. I've heard some gems on it such as American Pie, Top of the World, Go Your Own Way and First cut is the deepest
