I think the top 500 this year is far worse than last year's

So, it must be different than last years. I listen to Smooth quite a bit, but haven't actually managed to catch any of the top 500. How is it worse than last years, in your opinion?

I blame the listeners ... They did the voting 😉

I haven't heard many songs which I've never heard on Smooth before. The same songs have been voted for as are normally played

I wish you could pick your own three songs and not have to choose from a list.

I picked my own three songs.
"Imagine" by John Lennon pipped Simon and Garfunkel's "Bridge Over Trouble Water as the listeners' favourite. Looking through the whole top 500 I couldn't see any Queen tracks. The Beatles and Elvis, like Gold's version of the chart, were well represented.
Adele featured strongly as did Abba.

I'm not at all surprised by the list

Same old rubbish i left Smooth when magic came to D1. No Dj ftom 10pm also takes the mick. Terrible from global but no doubt millions love listening to droll depressing songs all day relayed on smooth Xtra too.

I agree, Smooth Xtra and the automated late night offerings do take the "mick"

I stopped listening to the "Smooth" brand on a regular basis but pop in now and again. Last night there was a show on called "The Great American Songbook.," with that well known popular DJ Andrew Castle! (Didn't he used to play tennis)?
Among many fine tunes he played Home Loving Man by Andy Williams and Don't Give Up On Us by David Soul. Both were written by Northern Ireland born Tony Macaulay (the former with fellow Brits Cook & Greenaway).
Does the "American" tag just refer to the singers?

Haha Andrew Castle loves to talk about tennis! I presume it only applies to singers

I was thinking in terms of there not being a list at all. Some artists were completely overlooked because I assume Smooth wouldn't play them. You have Whitney, but not Mariah for example. Or at least have a bigger pool of songs. Capital's Hall Of Fame never had a list, as far as I can remember. You just picked them. I suppose it was different because it was more a pop station. Very predictable, I thought. Only criticism. Smooth'not Capital. Didn't vary much from 2013.

Think I've heard Dream Lover on Smooth before

Has Paul Phear taken over the British Songbook?

And when did the Soul music shows finish? I thought they had requirement to do so many hours of 'specialist music' in their format - or is that now covered by the love songs show?

Some.very good songs tonight including the Kane Gang Closest thing to heaven and Barbera Dickson Answer me. Tracks ideal for the songbook but not regular shows (Before Amara et al get all animated)

Yes I agree from 10pm it is bad not having a DJ. Why is it EVERY station also seems to play non stop depressing songs late at night? Bring the back the good old days of listener interaction and competitions etc.

According to Globals amazing tests. 😂. As long as Build Me Up bl**dy Buttercup and Dancing Queen remain on hourly rotation they will all keep listening Borsant.

I'd rather listen to The Kane Gang and Barbara Dickson than utter garbage like Lemar and Backstreet Boys.

Smooth plays neither of those two tracks (Not on rotation anyway) But you're right Amara, amazing tests aside the official numbers from the last SIX quarters suggests that their 'Utter rubbish' is precisely what large numbers of people want

I'm guessing Paul Hollins is busy with his Blue Rev company and possible can't commit to Smooth on a regular basis but still do cover.

They were certainly played regularly when I was a listener under Global but of course you have to stick up for them.😊

Not to mention the worst of the worst, Daniel Beddingfield If you're not the one. Wouldn't mind hearing Gotta Get Thru This though

Smooth has been a bit more interesting lately though
