The presenter (who's name escapes me right now) that was on in the early hours today kept on announcing the death of Bin Laden after every song.

This was fair enough. He also kept saying the news at 4am would have a full report. There was no news at 4am (just a silence and then another song)

He carried on like nothing happened, announcing the death every five minutes. If I didn't know better I would have said it was recorded. Strange when they pretend something didn't happen (that obviously did)

No Lol , I was very mardy about Carlos when the pregnancy was announced but as someone said I can always unlike and being nasty about someone is petty (My mother is good at this and I know I don't want to follow her example).

Anyway I digress , this was on my twitter feed about 30 minutes ago "Congratulations to @smoothcarlos and wife Claire on the birth of their daughter Martha May."

Hope Claire and Martha are doing well , I know for a fact Carlos will be walking on air right now.

There probably was news at 4am, but not on the frequency you were listening to.

Myguess would be that a technical problem meant it failed to appear & then the silence triggered the emergency backup which played a song.

The presenter wouldn't have known that the 4am news hadn't appeared on the frequency you were listening to, as he could only hear the one where he was (Manchester) and that was probably ok.

The joys of networking!

Thank you Bundyman. Make sense how you have explained it. I was listening on DAB. I didn't think to switch over to FM.

Sadly, this seems to be quite common.

What I have heard of the station on national DAB seems to suggest that the shows (I think) that come from the London studios in the morning seem to sound pretty slick, then the Manchester based shows seem to have frequent gaps, particularly around the news output along with various other issues (gaps in music, adverts over music, music over music etc...)

Maybe Smooth's listeners should chip together to buy their Manchester studio a DAB radio so they can hear what goes out on the national version of their station rather than the Manchester version?

I heard the new ID jingles out from the News the other day for each presenter apart from Breakfast.

Who sings the ID name jingles which have been tailed on at the front of the current singing one? Also who is the bloke which says the name of the station and show ID's on some of the jingles?

Denise Van Outen covering for Emma B this Sunday afternoon.

Now theres a name Denise Van Outen.I think she would be good on smooth will tune in for her more than i would Emma B who sounds like she has a frog in her throat. The one thing thats bugging me is when they say before the news "The home of simon bates at breakfast" I think we know that know but i guess its a smooth selling point.

She only lasted six months on Capital FM and didn't even make the first airing of OK TV before resigning.

I'm not too sure if she's Smooth's demographic either, probably more suited to Real or Heart, just like Ms B.

A slightly eccentric Golden Hour this morning which included Abba'a Mamma Mia (number one late Jan 1976) and Hot Chocolate's So You Win Again (number one summer 1977). The year - 1975!

Mama Mia was definitely 1975 ..13 December 1975 when it 1st entered the UK chart
Hot Chocolate was obviously an error.

So once again Smooth decides to go for a blonde female former breakfast tv star for its Sunday afternoon output.
As Denise says herself.this will be her first, solo, radio show.
I wonder if this show will be live or voice tracked.I wonder.

I can't stand Smooth Radio but I do know that the last time I listened the male station voice was Mitch Johnson.

Rick Scott is the male station voice on Real.

Ian Brannan was being used on promos and the odd ID last time I listened, so could be him.

Still don't understand why they didn't stick with Sean Bolger from the '07 relaunch - classy and, perhaps more importantly, underused - so the liners stood out.

Hi Tom. You've forced me to have a listen to Smooth now.

Female station voice is the really nice and everything Gina Mellotte.

Male station voice is indeed Mitch Johnson.

Maybe I was lucky with the time I dipped into Smooth Radio this afternoon (1.30-2pm) but the playlisting was more consistent (no random change of tempo) and David Jensen is excellent in that slot.
