I just wish Ofcom would introduce a rule that any predominantly music-based radio station must broadcast in stereo. To me, it's farcical that we have mono music stations on DAB and still it is trying to be sold as an "improvement".

GMG decided to have 2 mono Smooth stations rather than 1 stereo station, but did not save GMG!

The station will be at Blackpool on 31st August to switch on the Illuminations. Seems the event is bigger each year.

________

Was there the other week. The council have spent millions on doing the front up. New tracks and trams also.

Just like to say that Kid has been sounding more lively and animated on Drive over the last few days. If I'm prepared to say he was sounding tired, I'm prepared to also accentuate the positive

Probably the last Blackpool switch-on for Real and Smooth unless GMG signed a contract into next year?

If those stations become Heart and Gold next year, I can't see both stations featuring the Blackpool switch on. Not all the acts would suit either brand.

Erm, they could change the acts...??

Nonetheless, I think you're right. The Heart brand doesn't fit with Blackpool. Too northern and downmarket. Sorry, Blackpool.

Blackpool is trying to make it self more upmarket
Although the event could be a Heart event featuring more artists like Lawson signed to Global!

Strangely some of the artists like Faith, Noisettes and Overtones sound retro enough to feel in place on Gold, but will not be played as they are current!
Still a possibility Global may still keep Smooth as a easy listening soul flavoured station going to keep the record companies happy so they can plug retro artists such as these on commercial radio rather than just the BBC!

Radio 2 could get it back with Chris Moyles? BBC might not bid for it? Global national really want to promote Blackpool?

I had problems trying to watch it. It kept going offline. But a great event. I loved it!

Radio 2 depending on funds after DQF. Would be a big event for Rock FM or Radio Wave to cover.

This is similar to a national station promoting something based in London, and do people really care about who live in the North? This was a bigger occasion, only because it's 100 years since the lights were first switched on. Plus the lead upto it over the last few years on Radio 2, then Smooth.

Hi! All
I see tfrom the report of Mark Goodier leaving Smooth that Mark is going to concentrate on running Wise Buddah, but do you think he will now go back to cover or getting his own show on Radio 2 and maybe even drivetime.

What other station might Mark end up at and as for a replacement might it be Pat Sharp or as Pat seems to take a lot of time off who else might present the show, could it maybe a presenter from Gold brought in to take over in maybe any potential change from Smooth to Gold?.

Hi! All
In reply to Occy I would just like to add that before the illuminations ceremony was broadcast on Radio 2 that Radio 1 broadcast it for a few years, I remember seeing Simon Bates and Status Quo as well as Mark Goodier and even after she left Radio 1 and I think was at Virgin Lynn Parsons was at the desk controlling the music etc.

Radio Today:

Smooth presenter Simon Bates is now hosting a new separate daily breakfast show on the national digital station Smooth 70s at the same time as his show on Smooth Radio.

And whilst the station isn’t shouting about the new addition to the all-70s station, they have confirmed to Radio Today that Simon is providing “a little content” for the service.

Radio Today readers have been in touch to ask if the show is a simulcast but by all accounts it appears to be voice-tracked complete with a Smooth 70s Golden Hour from 9am.

Smooth 70s launched the day after boxing day last year using space previously occupied by Smooth Christmas.

Might hear by the end of the month what Global's plans for Smooth and Smooth 70's are if the Ofcom and OFT reports are published
http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012...obal-radio-gmg
"Accordingly, I consider it appropriate to issue an intervention notice in this case, and I am therefore asking Ofcom to prepare a report advising me in greater detail about plurality."

In addition the Office of Fair Trading will advise Hunt on competition and jurisdictional aspects of the deal, with both bodies reporting back to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport by 28 September.

I think Smooth Radio has a brand that should stay .. but over the last number of months its lost its way .... as for Real Radio ... its the same format as UTV stations and other radio groups .. The century brand was of a classic hits format .. and that should used
Rock Radio was great .. but it should have played Rock classics over peak hour day parts .. The Real Radio XS .. is Rock thats lost into a mainstream style and its not working..... It should be more on the style of the Arrow .. non rock fans can enjoy it for longer than 20 mins ..

So Saying its 14 small stations ..In truth its three music formats not in daily use in the uk ... Lite .. Smooth ,Real to change to Century Classic hits, And Rock Radio Classic Rock ...... to just convert all 14 stations to Heart and co is a pure waste of time ..
