That's just nonsense.

Remind me of the last time you heard Elkie Brooks or louis Armstrong on Capital, Kerrang or Kiss.
You would hear Elkie Brooks on Gold or Magic's AM network though.

I'm not sure two dying AM networks equal "just about any commercial radio station in the country."

(And when does Gold then go on to play Cee Lo Green or Drizabone Soul Family?)

Ok, just about any mainstream commercial station, then.

Wouldn't be at all surprised to hear them on Xfm, so unbelievably MOR/bland/predictable that once bold and brave station has become.

Again, nonsense. You'd never hear Elkie Brooks on the likes of Key 103, Trent, or Heart.

So, basically, you're talking out of your rear end. There is no commercial station that would play that list of songs, and for you to suggest that Xfm might, shows your lack of knowledge about commercial radio.

But, thanks for playing.

Go to comparemyradio.com

Compare the tracks played on XFm and Smooth and you get this:

Smooth Radio London played 1,167 unique tracks
The stations share 2 unique tracks
XFM London shares 0% of its playlist with Smooth Radio London
Smooth Radio London shares 0% of its playlist with XFM London

What can be quite nice about Smooth's oldies is that they don't necessarily play the most obvious hit by an artist. Examples are Gerry Rafferty - Get it Right Next Time (rather than Baker Street), Chic - My Forbidden Lover (rather than Good Times), Boz Scaggs - What Can I Say (rather than Lido Shuffle) and so on. I hope that this continues and indeed is built on.

See what you mean as XFM is becoming more mainstream under Global compared to the early alternative music days under Sammy Jacob! Maybe XFM might change under the new PD but is another thread!

Will be interesting to see if Smooth continues to lose audience share in London, but the next Rajars might just be for the national total!

The D1 feed is back, but sounds iffy.

Mark Goodier's claming you'll be able to hear Smooth on DAB in NI. Our friends in Ulster will be in for a shock when it's not!

Mitch is obviously a class act, but I did wonder at the time why they didn't stick with Sean Bolger for very long at all when they relaunched Smooth the last time round? He was a great station voice.

Mitch Johnson :-

Smooth deep and rich. Authoritive and warm. Sexy.

Just what Smooth Radio is after then. Not sure about sexy though!
Mitch is a great voice (and an excellent presenter too). Effectively a return to Smooth as he was the voiceover when Smooth FM launched in the North West until it became Smooth Radio. I think it was same in London and for the GMG-era Jazz FM too.

The last ten songs on Smooth Radio:

Smokey Robinson - Being With You
Elkie Brooks - Pearls A Singer
Louis Armstrong - We Have All The Time In The World
O'jays - I Love Music
Berlin - Take My Breath Away
Drizabone Soul Family - I Fell Apart
Supremes - Come See About Me
Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere
Simply Red - If You Don't Know Me By Now
Beautiful South - Dream A Little Dream

Other than Radio 2, where else can you hear that sort of music selection?
Trouble is, you'll hear it on Radio 2 without the ads and with much better presenters.

To beat Radio 2, Smooth will need to be distinctive and offer something different. But it doesn't.

Oh dear. No sense of humour then?

It was my turn to be ironic.

You know full well the point I'm making.

He was certainly the VO on Smooth FM in London when it launched. Bit too long ago for me to remember if he was the VO during the JAZZFM branding, although it wouldn't surprise me for a seemless transfer between Jazz and Smooth as the final part of Jazz FM's history on FM was using the soul/Motown format.

But after 7pm in the evening would you hear that list?
During the specialist hours Smooth may pick up listeners, especially in work places or driving.

Ah, Mr Park - the nationally recognised lobotomiser of radio stations. He actually phoned me up once, after I'd written telling him to keep his filthy corporate, dumbing down mitts off Xfm to say "we're gonna format this station, and you'll love it!". I nearly puked.

He wouldn't have the faintest idea how to take a specialist station to "new heights".

Sorry- Off Topic!

Yes i agree with that comment.I like radio 2 daytime but at night i just switch off its so specialized and thats why i like smooth as its good music 24/7 with a bit of special music documentrys etc at weekends. So far i am loving smooth and i hope it stays as it is and not too many repeats unlike other stations. Also having a dj 24/7 is good.

Very irresponsible to advertise Smooth on the rear of busses.

Following traffic could tune in, which could cause untold rear-ending as drivers nodded off.
LOL!

A few months ago Smooth Radio london was up around 1900 unique tracks, over the last few weeks/months, this has been coming down week on week, to as someone as quoted earlier 1167... thats not a good trend if they are to rival radio 2 , unless it all changes as of Monday.

Frankly, it's a bit dumb to just go through the list and point out other stations where you might hear each individual track and use that as a criticism of Smooth! How is it relevant to Smooth if a satellite and online station like Solar plays some of the tracks?? Unless you are suggesting that Smooth should only play records that no other station ever plays??

The point is, no other stations delivers that selection of music. Gold - maybe the closest - plays far more upbeat pop and rock oldies, and doesn't have the soul bias Smooth does. And it's not on FM. BBC local radio might share some of the tracks, but they are not music stations, as Smooth is.

He was - they even had the pre-GMG production revoiced in late 2002 before the 'Get It On' rebrand.
