Has anyone noticed the playlists shortening and becoming more repetitive. Also I have noticed quite a few songs on smooth that gold play regular. Not looking good in my books I hope global don't ruin smooth.

I'm more of a Smooth 70's listener, so I hadn't noticed. Had it on 9-12 this morning though.

Going for 'GOLD'!
Tinny audio hasn't arrived...Yet! Wonder what they'll do with their specialist output. Can't see Waterman's hit parade on for any longer. Heart FM maybe? Soul shows may be reduced? |

Whether Smooth remains Smooth or becomes Gold or something else, you can rest assured there'll be changes. You don't buy an underperforming radio group and do nothing.
Whatever happens to Smooth, Richard Park will use it to attack Magic in London from the upper end of its audience and use Heart to attack it from the lower end. Poaching Magic's listeners and ending its days as London's number 1 is his main priority and Smooth will be the vehicle for doing that. If so which presenter? When Simon Bates left Global seemed to be on good terms and he has the best track record for audience awareness for London? http://www.ukdigitalradio.com/news/d...ar=2011&id=363 Quote:
Richard Park, Global Radio's Director of Broadcasting, said: "We would like to thank Simon for his outstanding contribution over the years and we wish him all the best in the next phase of his career."
Otherwise Tony Dibbin is good, but not well known in London.Or they could bring in a new presenter? |

I am beginning to wonder why Smooth keep sending me there weekly music survey of new songs to rate when they no longer seem to be a major part of the output anymore. BTW I like the new jingles I only hope the station survives long enough for us to get used to them. I fear that Gold is just round the corner. |

Yes I have noticed this and also that there are now seems to be very little new music played at all. It seems to be morphing into Gold everyday with the exception that you do not get 4 songs in a row with the almost predictable robotic presenter comments that you get on Gold.

I wasn't referring to recent hits Martin but actual new music playing the songs that are featured in the weekly listener surveys that I & many others complete. I find myself ticking the "unfamiliar" bit more & more as they just aren't being played. |

Provisional CC decision now released, no disposals required in London or the West Midlands::
http://radiotoday.co.uk/2013/02/prov...obal-gmg-deal/ It looks to me like all of the Smooths apart from London & West Midlands, together with Capital S Wales & Heart N Wales, may have to be offloaded. It also appears that the final decision has been delayed until after Easter. |

Global could also sell the London AM Gold frequency to ensure the new 'Smooth' maintains an advertising presence in the capital. |

So hypothetically, we could end up with Gold in the two Smooth FM TSA's they're allowed to keep, with Smooth continuing under a new owner in the core Smooth TSA's? This would be an interesting proposition for a new owner considering the NW Smooth is market leading and Glasgow has a high share too.
However it appears one option Global could take is to dispose of some of its existing stations in the markets concerned in order to keep the newly acquired GMG ones. So in Manchester it could offer to get rid of, say, Xfm and Gold (and Real XS) if it meant keeping Real and Smooth. But that's all by the by - as RT says "Historically, provisional findings by the Competition Commission have been significantly different to final decisions". |

So looks like Global will be able to rebrand Real into Heart. And FM frequencies in London and. Birmingham which they will be happy with. They will probably prefer to to resell Smooth onto a friendly rival for a reasonable price? Could still be Bauer or more likley Orion?

Much safer to sell to someone who doesn't know what they're doing. Like Orion, yes. |

I think we could be heading for: Gold on FM in London and WM; a new owner for Smooth based in Manchester, which would be on national DAB and on FM in selected areas (but not London or WM).; new owners for Capital Cardiff & Heart N Wales. The Smooth brand hasn't worked in London so I can't see why Global would want to keep hold of it for 102.2, if it's worth something for a new operator. |

With the suggestion that Orion could bid for one or more of the Smooth licences, I wonder if they'd bid for Smooth East Midlands as a brand extension of Gem as an older sister station or Free Radio 80s on FM?

Not Bauer. The possibility of Magic on FM in Manchester, Glasgow, Newcastle and Nottingham would be too big a threat.

However if Global sell it to say Orion at a loss then Orion could easily just sell it to Bauer at a profit, easy and fast profit.

Some FM licences. National DAB and a few million listeners. Perhaps Virgin Smooth as a new operator for the over 30s?

Town & Country could get hold of Global's Capital FM (rebrand it Nation Hits all be it with more modern music) or UTV (bring back Red Dragon and share output with rest of UTV group)
Same with up North - Town & Country (rebrand to Nation Hits) or UTV (and bring back heritage names or Signal North Wales?) or maybe Real (if Global dont want to loose Capital in South) sell to Emap and Magic for Wales? |
