My dad is in the states and has asked me if I want an iPad. A 16gig wifi only unit is approx £100 cheaper than in the UK.

I'm up for telling him to get one, as I want one anyway. The only thing i'm worried about is some sort of uncompatibility with the u,k. Will I have problems with wifi standerds? Will itunes refuse t recognise it?

This seems like a deal too good to be true without hicups, So I'm asking DS what pitfulls could I expect with an imported IPad?

It should work fine. Others on DS brought them over from the States before they were available in the UK no problem.

The charger is universal voltage - but the plug will have the wrong adapter for the UK. But you can get the plug off an old iPod charger or use a travel plug etc.

As mentioned only an adaptor problem, and if anything you get a volume boost from buying a US model, European iPods have their volume limited because of the French I believe. I assume iPads suffer the same fate so getting a US version no limit!

Once sales tax is added in the USA it will come to about £339, only £80 cheaper. Then you have to take postage into consideration, it wont be a massive saving.

I don't think postage will be an issue unless his Dad is planning to charge him for his airfare

i got an american one back when they were first released. yeah - you got to pay sales tax which varies by state - NY state its 8.75% so it will be $543 - about 344 quid... the only other issue you'll have is getting a compatible plug

Won't need to pay sales tax surely if you bring it on as hand luggage on a plane?

You pay Sales Tax at any shop in the US regardless of your tourist status - similar to VAT here. There are some tax free shops once you get past security into US airports but I've never seen electronics offered as part of the tax free goods - its mostly limited to the usual duty free stuff - perfume, booze etc.

I think you're thinking of import tax that the UK exchequer can charge if you bring goods back into the country... as far as I remember as long as its below 500 quid you dont need to pay it.... but whether its hand or cargo hold baggage is irrelevant.

^^^ Not entirely true, Alaska, Delaware and a couple other states have no sales tax at all....

They dont? Wow.... do they have taxes elsewhere to compensate... or does the state just use less public revenue than the others?

You just take it on the plane as hand luggage and post the box and paperwork home seperately!

I did it with a watch a couple of years ago. The salesman in the shop actually did it all for me. He said "just wear it" and posted the box and all the paperwork and stuff for me so i didnt have any of it when i got on the plane, just in case! Top guy!

Yeah, I did the same for a laptop... just ditched the package in the bin and carried it on as hand luggage. Strolled through customs without any issue. I mean how can they tell if you've only just bought it and didn't leave the country with it when you departed? But I think import duty is only applicable for goods over 500 or 600 quid. So for an iPad there would be no issue,

that is still good savings, the cheapest Ipad and gatwick duty free (dixons) was only £13 less then the advertised £429 on the shop. on top of that, it was on the departure lounge, no such dixons shop when you arrive from holiday

Other tha the plug which you can buy from an Apple store or online, it's the same unit.

unfortunately you can't jailbreak 3.2.2 but a new jailbreak is out soon although its probably better to wait till the 4.2 comes to the ipad in november.

That explains why Americans talk so loud. They are deaf.

My iPad comes on Monday (from Apple, UK I get a 25% discount through our work reward scheme).

Why jailbreak it? I don't know a lot about the iPad yet and I'm just curious.
