Some people like it, can't see the appeal myself. Too many cooks and all that.

Taybarns is an all you can eat Restaurant owned by the Whitbread group, they turned some of their bigger Brewers Fayres and Brewsters into these as the ball pits were taking up a lot of space and not generating enough business.

It is an American concept, you pay one price on the way in and then help yourself from a massive counter, the counters cost 1/4 of a million and you can get starters, puds and mains, soups, salad bar, carvery, Indian, Chinese, chip shop, pizza, and all on the same plate if you wish.
The counter is stocked up by cooks all the time and most of it is packet food. http://www.taybarns.com/

There are not many around but the Whitbread guys said they are very succsessful compared to when the pubs were Brewers Fayres.

Can't see anything that looks that appealing on the menu to me

Taybarn's is like my staff canteen. Food is stodgy and generic. Nothing stands out at all from the menu and everything tastes bland. It will probably be full of chavs also.

Exactly as I assumed.

I'm a bit of a food snob but my sister is desperate for me to drive her and her mates over to the one near us.

I assume I can stick to the pizza/ salad and it won't be so bad?

What nothing at all? It might not taste great but there is something for everyone on there.

Not for the Flyboy family I'm afraid. They have only three or four vegetarian choices and restrict their children's menu to under tens only. Flyboy11 eats no more food than a nine year old; hardly family friendly, Very unfair and too discriminatory for my liking.

my view... encourages people to over-eat, so not a great fan. I have only seen it on TV though, when BBC news did a report on it. The food isn't going to appeal to a food snob which you say you are, either, since it seems to be about cheap and piling it high.

Which should ring many loud alarm bells for everybody. I would be concerned about what corners they are cutting to make a profit.

I don't think you have to be a food snob to not like Taybarns

It all sounds very downmarket to me.

I can imagine it would appeal to people from places like Swindon.

I know. I don't consider myself a food snob and I would hate to go to Taybarns. But you can almost guarantee that a food snob won't like it because it's unlikely that they use high quality ingredients and the cooking is probably canteen-standard.

There was a BBC feature on Taybarns last year - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/8320043.stm

Scroll down a bit to see a video report.

I'm no snob - but i thought it to be in the interests of everyone to leave a review of my last experience at Taybarns, don't think I'll be back.

They're also full of sink estate families too, normally with two or three screaming brats or dodgy looking teenagers in tow.

My nearest one is in Wigan which I think says it all.
That said I loved eating at per kilo restaurants when I was travelling in Brazil which are basically the same thing i.e serve yourself buffets. I like the concept of being able to have a few different things. If there was one nearer to me I would consider going occassionally.

Spending a night in a Premier Inn that's right next to a venue I'm visiting tomorrow, I found that the "attached catering" was a Taybarn.

Literally a once-in-a-lifetime experience, I think.

A little like a works canteen, but without the charm.
