Thing about this Vodafone data limit thing is that the rest will follow if they get away with it. I am with them with a year to run on my contract but I bet when I do renew the whole data plan world will will be different (i.e. worse).

I took out a 24 month contract with vodafone, when the desire came out. Then they introduced the £5 charge for each 500mb of data used. I wasnt happy about this, and wrote to them, after a couple of phone calls, and an email - they released me from my contract without penalty. I was only 6/7 months into my contract.

I moved to t-mobile, and to be honest the data service is noticeably slower than vodafone. I think when the Desire HD comes out, I am going to move back to vodafone and get a Desire HD. I read somewhere they would be offering that phone with 1GB of data. If it is only 250MB, then I will have to think again. I can cope with 500MB, 250MB is way to low. I am lucky however as I have wifi at home and at work. This covers most of my hours in a day. This probably explains why I could stay within the 500MB limit.

Your spot on with this. All the networks are struggling with their networks. The takeup of smartphones has caught them out. Rather than invest in their networks, they are clamping down on the amount of data they are allowing their customers.

Whilst other countries are getting 4G, we are hit with 500MB limits.

Sorry for gatecrashing this thread. I am getting my daughter a blackberry for her birthday - she is currently on Vodafone

I was going to just add the BlackBerry data package to her sim, do you not think this is the best thing now these changes have happened?

She is an exsiting customer but has never had a data package before

Thanks

Surely Vodafone cannot introduce additional data charges after a contract has been agreed? Is that what some people are saying?

I've got 1GB of data on my £30 a month contract, which is fine for me, but I'd be outraged if my 1Gb limit was reduced to 500Mb.

Generally 500mb is enough for basic use and is sufficient for the average user who just uses email, messaging and the odd bit of web surfing or Facebook and Twitter etc. You can use your WiFi network when at home without eating into your data allowance. If you stream audio and video a lot or download plenty of stuff away from home then you will need more. Bear in mind people on these forums are not average users generally speaking tend to use more data then normal users.

If you avoid You Tube and BBC Iplayer etc, you will be OK, I have some mates at work who use You Tube a lot, they can go through 2 or 3 GB in a week with no trouble!

and blackberry data is compressed between the handheld and the BIS servers - some articles state as much as 1:6 - so if that's accurate a 500mb limit is really a 6gb limit.

Okay, so you can't go and use the 6gb - but you should find you use less data, for the same activities, than you would have on any other phone.

Phone vodafone and ask how much data allowance you get with your contract. It may be 1GB, if she doesnt download vasts amount then she will be fine. Beware, as some contracts now will only come with 250MB.

If your on a 1GB data allowance you will stay on 1GB. What vodafone did was change their soft 500MB FUP to a hard 500MB FUP i.e. where as they didnt mind you going over 500MB before, they will now charge you £5 for each 500MB chuck you use.

I believe this is because data usage is increasing so much that they are going to keep the same number of masts, however they will be moving. That's what I read recently
.”

They will keep about 3000 masts and the rest taken offline. Read this.

Here is part of an email rec'd from VF, this first part was them respnding to my complaint, which they didn't !

anyway.....

If you accept this, please get back to me with a confirmation email and I'll be more than happy to amend the account accordingly.

Furthermore, as per the terms and conditions of the contract, the changes made over the internet cost does not increases your total charges (based on your usage in the previous month) by more than 10%.

This is the reason a letter confirming this was sent to you. If you still wish to cancel the contract, you'll be charged an early cancellation fees.

You may also click here to get more information on the terms and conditions of the contract. Refer point 11b.

Just to let you know that we did intimated our customers about the change in the pricing before 30 days of the implementation.

This was also in line with the terms and conditions of the contract. Refer point 7a.

I'm sure you'll understand the situation we are in.

I hope this explains the details more clearly.

Trust the above information helps and sort the issue to your satisfaction.

Kind regards,

Thank you for being a Vodafone customer and I hope you enjoy all that Vodafone has to offer.

Vodafone has logged your email address in case it needs to contact you about other matters relating to your account. It may also be used for marketing purposes - you will soon receive an email explaining this and how you can opt out.

I am still trying to work out, how £5 works out less than 10% of £35 or even 10% of £40 !
