There's a lot of myths and rumours about ABBA, their splits, their relationships with each others, reunions etc... The truth rarely gets a mention.
It's always said that Agnetha was hurt by the others, but that isn't true. She is on record as being the only member of the band who DIDN'T want ABBA to split in the first place. She felt they could have lasted a few more years if they slowed down a bit, rather than stopping altogether, but the others wanted to work on separate projects. Her autobiography makes much about her ABBA days quite clear, and it rarely tallies with many of the 'stories' written about her. Agnetha always gets a lot of bad press, mainly due to the fact that she doesn't want to be a 'celebrity' and doesn't like attending showbiz events. For that, she is labelled a 'recluse', despite the fact that she is very active in the Stockholm social scene.
Bjorn, Benny and Frida have been happy to appear together for ABBA events over the years, but now will no longer do so as a '3'. They will only appear as a '2'. This is because, when they appeared as a 3, it would only lead to Agnetha being slaughtered in the media for 'not turning up and ruining things'. So they only appear as a '2' now, to avoid Agnetha receiving such criticism. She was, and remains, a shy and private lady and doesn't like the glare of the media spotlight. Her private life was in turmoil in the 90's, but in the past couple of years, she has been happier than at any other time in her life. Agnetha and Bjorn celebrated the birth of their third granddaughter in February, and Agnetha has appeared twice for ABBA events; receiving the Swedish lifetime achievement award with Frida in Stockholm, and appearing with Benny for the video opening to ABBAWORLD in Melbourne. Agnetha has been much more visible recently and, if ABBA were ever going to do anything again, then, for her, now would be the time.
Bjorn hasn't performed for many years now, largely due to ill health. He has been left with memory problems and struggles to recall much of the ABBA years. He has said that he listens to the music and watches footage and sometimes he just cannot remember even being there. Benny has remained an active performer all these years, and is happy to perform at ABBA-related events, such as the 'Thank You For The Music' concert in Hyde Park last year, but Bjorn was content to just appear on stage and make a short speech, and was not able to perform, even to play the guitar for a short while. Despite Bjorn's memory problems, however, his lyric writing ability remains untouched. He is still able to write fantastic songs, such as those in 'Kristina'. It shows that talent is not a learned skill, but something innate. Bjorn has remained the band's unofficial spokesman to this day. He does more ABBA-related work than any of the others and remains deeply proud of their achievements.
Frida is probably the member of the band that would never have hesitated to take part in a reunion. She, I believe, would always have said yes.
If ABBA decide to return, it will not be a tour or a concert of any kind. Agnetha would feel awkward and frightened at being on stage again, Bjorn is sadly unable to perform, and only Benny and Frida would perhaps be able to meet expectations. A reunion would be more about going back into the studio together, where ABBA were more at home. In the studio, it doesn't matter if they're in the 60's and can't squeeze into the spandex again. Their voices and ability is timeless. Imagine Agnetha and Frida singing 'Story of a Heart', written by Benny and Bjorn last year for the last BAO album, or even 'Second Best To None' that B&B wrote as a promotional song for Benny's hotel in Stockholm. It would have been great!! B&B still know how to write the 'ABBA sound.'
A return to the recording studio with Michael Tretow co-producing, Rutgar Gunnarsson on bass, Lasse Wallender and Janne Schaffer on guitars, and Roger Palm on drums (in the absence of Ola Brunkert) to name but a few, would be fantastic. Let's hope it happens........
