I can't make Curries that taste like the curries I can get in my local Indian restaurant
Are there ANY supermarket sauces/pastes in a jar that taste the same as in a restaurant ??
Oh yes - I must be able to buy it in Asda or Sainsbury's !

The Lloyd Grossman Madras is the closest I've tried.

Why not get a Curry Kit via mail order though?

Forget the jars and try making the curries from scratch, the jars bear little resemblance to any authentic curries.Try a recipe book "Indian Food Made Easy" by Anjum Anand go to an Indian food stockist and get the spices that are in the front of the book, they can all be bought on line too. Do not buy them in a supermarket for the spices they are a rip-off.

Follow the recipes to the letter, a curry cannot be rushed they take a lot of time and patience but once you have had one a supermarket jar versionwill never taste the same again.

Remember it is not how hot a curry is that makes it great it is the total flavour and the British idea of a curry is nothing like an authentic Indian one probably one reason your dishes never taste the same as a good Indian restaurant.

Try making your own once you have you will be hooked and never go back top the jars again.

I noticed MSG as an ingredient on a couple of those kits.

You can easily batch prepare a base paste that will store in the fridge for a week or in the freezer for months,

Hopefully not in the Madras, Jalfrezi or Vindaloo ones as I've just ordered those.

MSG gets a bad rap. Used correctly it can do what it's supposed to do and be a standard flavour enhancer.

One of the problems is that companies/takeaways trying to cut corners over used it, and salt, to perk up their food.

If youre really loathe to make your own from scratch, see if there is a stockist of Anila's sauces near you.

Unfortunately there isnt one near me, but I took home a couple of jars of her Goan Green Curry sauce when I was at a food & drink convention earlier this year. It is divine stuff and I would defy anyone to guess it came out of a jar.

How do you know they have MSG? I had a look in the site, but can't see where it says this.

All their instant kits have MSG listed in allergy section.

I just ordered a book called 'The Curry Secret: How to Cook Real Indian Restaurant Meals at Home'. It gets some awesome reviews.

Can I recommend this curry receipe... http://www.channel4.com/food/recipes...ecipe_p_1.html

I love my currys and I made this at the weekend, it was top notch. As good as any from the local Indian. I used chicken thighs instead of a whole chicken broken up and it worked well. Would say you need chicken (or lamb or beef I guess) on the bone, just to make sure it doesn't dry out while in the oven.

Seemingly 75% of UK indian restaurants use Pataks, http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6700173.stm. Buy a jar of their paste, use butter instead of oil, use passata instead of tinned toms and use cream instead of yoghurt and pile on the fresh corriander and you'll get something pretty close (and very tasty, albeit unhealthy!).

Not possible. But why don't you make a batch and freeze it?
A curry sauce is really pretty basic. Look at this thread at the recipe from poster 'degsyhufc'
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s....php?t=1363514
Very easy to make and so delicious. Later try adding other spices.
If you use garlic and ginger out a jar all you have to do is chop an onion!
