You mean Bread's 'Everything I own'....?
Shaggy's inspiration for covering it was more than likely the Ken Boothe version... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JZHTg26q1Js

Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers - Islands in the stream (1983) and Marshall Hain - Dancing in the city (1978)

Mungo Jerry's Lady Rose and McGuinness Flint's When I'm Dead & Gone sound similar. When a clip of the former song was in Phil Butler's Bits & Pieces on Friday night, I thought it was a clip from the latter song!

The piano instrumental in Florence and the Machine's 'Rabbit Heart' and John Newman's 'Love Me Again' are identical.

The Beatles - Taxman from their 1966 album Revolver

The Jam - Start from 1980

Always thought the riff was such an obvious steal, but loads of people I spoke to at the time hadn't noticed it! Really?

It is a VERY obvious steal. I remember it was discussed a lot and confirmed some time not long after release in 1980. And I was only about 13. It was possibly not widely known by the young record buying public immediately the single was released (and of course entered the chart at no. 1) because Taxman was probably the lesser known song, not having been a single. I know for sure I heard Taxman AFTER I heard Start!

"Start!" is based on both the main guitar riff and bass riff of The Beatles' 1966 song "Taxman" from the album Revolver, written by George Harrison.[3] Likewise, The Jam's "Dreams of Children" had featured the same "Taxman" bassline, played then as a lead guitar riff.

Shaggy- Angel has a similar intro to Boy George's Everything I Own
I always thought "Angel" nicked it's bassline from Steve Miller's "The Joker"

Also Changing Man's riff is very much like ELO's 10538 Overture.

Just remembered one. The mid section of The Righteous Brothers You've Lost That Lovin Feeling is identical to the start of Summer Nights by John Travolta & Olivia Newton John.

Is it a steal, though? Paul Weller admitted he based the riff for 'Start' on 'Taxman'. I'd say a steal is when a band tries to pass off a riff or melody as its own, Just opening this up for debate, not arguing.

You are right, he admitted it. I was only using the word in response to the previous poster - I know that Paul never tried to pass it off as his own. In any case, it's amazing that anyone with fully functioning lugholes could hear both Taxman and Start! and not notice the blindingly obvious.

The riff from Deep Purple's 1970 single "Black Night" is very similar to the riff from Rick Nelson's 1962 version of "Summertime". Plagiary or coincidence?

The even more famous riff from Deep Purple's 1972 rock classic "Smoke On The Water" is almost identical to the riff from a very obscure 1965 jazz track by Astrud Gilberto entitled "Maria Quiet". Plagiary or coincidence?

The intro to Led Zeppelin's most famous track "Stairway To Heaven" is very similar indeed to an instrumental entitled "Taurus" recorded three years earlier by an American band called Spirit. Plagiary or coincidence?

The melody of "Hotel California" by the Eagles is very similar to that of a Jethro Tull song entitled "We Used To Know" recorded eight years earlier. Plagiary or coincidence?

True, and also identical to the riff from "Hang On Sloopy" by the McCoys.

This is an obscure one but most people know the song ''Go west'' by the village people but, did you know there is a Hymn called ''give thanks with a great-full heart'' that shares the same tune and I have no idea why...

I have no idea why either but they are exactly the same. Who wrote it first? They were both written in 1978 by different people.

Clean Bandit's Rock-a-Bye sounds like Lady GaGa's Alejandro.

Dimestars' My Superstar has a similar intro at least to Lemonheads' It's a Shame About Ray.

Lady Gaga's song Fashion sounds like Madonna's Holiday.

That guy from the New Radicals managed to write songs very similar to 'You Get What You Give' - one for Mel C (can't remember the title) and 'Loving Each Day' for Ronan Keating.
Either N-Dubz, or Dappy from N-Dubz had a single called Morning Star, parts of which sounded like You Get What You Give.

Whenever I hear the intro to Marlon JD by the Manics I always expect it to be the earlier 100 Years by The Cure.

Blur's For Tomorrow steals from Be My Wife by Bowie.

I can never hear the Wedding March without expecting it to break into Waltzing Matilda.

I thought Paul admitted he sampled the riff from ELO when he wrote 'Charming Man' but may be wrong? They are indeed very similar (if not identical).
