E = edge which is 2.5g

O2 and 3g don't happen that often, worst network with 3g.

G = GPRS

My phone only ever seems to connect to "H" around here, which I beleive is HSDPA or something?

How fast is that then?

That's the fastest available.

It's not in use in the UK so therefore it's irrelevant, and if you're talking out of the UK then the US have 4G in some areas.

I beg to differ but Vodafone and Three both deliver HSUPA I think Orange do too.

Also read recently Vodafone have now gone faster than HSUPA to a 14.4 service in London.

O2 are doing a tiny trial of LTE too, but in reality the H is good for CoolboyA, of the types mentioned in the thread H was the fastest.

Doesn't that depend on the phone or even any network branding the software has (I believe some Orange branded phones display 3G+ when HSDPA is available)?

My Desire never displays anything more than H, but I quite clearly get HSUPA (often getting full whack, 2Mbps)

2Mbps is not full whack, it's meant to be 14.4 or something theoretical, although real speeds are likely to be around 2Mbps

My understanding of HSUPA over HSDPA is it has a higher upload, something which doesn't make that much difference unless you do a lot of uploading and sharing content.

HSDPA Download 3.6
HSUPA Download 7.2

My phone (Desire) can only do 2Mbps. That's what HTC says, and that is the maximum I have ever got.
