Now, I can understand why modern pop is so popular. Sure, it's autotuned to death and the lyrics could have been written by a 10 year old, but it is actually pleasing to the ears. Music is supposed to be pleasant to listen to. But then you get people calling the music in the link I posted above 'real music'. REALLY? To me it is just NOISE. Just a bunch of fat guys who need haircuts swinging their heads around and roaring. How can anyone enjoy listening to that? Can anyone here explain to me? |

its a difficult question to answer because everyone has there own opinion and to be honest its probably musics question equivalent to 'What is the meaning of life'...
But i have very very strange music collection, a fact that often gets commented on... one minute im listening to cher or britney and the next im listening to slipknot or system of a down... I pick what i want to listen to depending on my mood, so if im getting ready to out that night usually some pop/dance will do... Whereas if im in a bit of a low listening to some indie/rock usually matches how i feel... Heavy metal however i do understand the creativity of, i understand that this is how these guys represent themselves, it derives from biker groups and is a more extreme/american version of punk. Personally i think as long as you dont take it too seriously then you can begin to appreciate it. |

I respect that everyone has different tastes in music. My personal opinion is that ^ this type of music is noise. I can't listen to it.
However, like I said, everyone has different tastes.

You need these characteristics - to be either
a) Young and full of angst. b) Old and fat and full of angst. Thankfully I'm just old and full of shite. |

People like what they like, simple as that. I've got mates who play in band that play really heavy Rock music similar to the music posted above. I personally don't like it myself but I can tell you that at least they're doing what they enjoy, they're not manufactured within an inch of their life, they're not getting people in to write or produce their music for them and they're not needing the radio, MTV or Simon Cowell to tell people to listen to them and go to their gigs.
You could go out there and find people who make an even stronger argument that the music in the charts isn't very pleasing on the ear either, and to be honest I find music from such people like Katy Perry (a girl in her 20s who writes music like she's still 11? Does no one else find this bizarre?) or Cheryl Cole (clearly cannot sing to save her life yet she's currently one of this country's biggest selling artists and having the cheek to judge other singers on X-Factor about singing) more offensive than that video you posted and I don't even listen to Cannibal Corpse or whatever they're called |

Really? Modern pop music (especially modern R&B/pop) is not at all pleasing to my ears. Give me Rock any day, but old Classic Rock, not Cannibal Corpse, which I agree is noise.

I think this really is noise but I guess there are some people that love it. Music is subjective and no two people have the same tastes. But Cannibal Corpse are just pure mindless noise. Good for winding up the neighbours though when they have house parties - just play some of that at full blast and they'll soon turn off their music

I take the OP's point, the results of music/vocals done in that 'style' are so, ahem, 'specialised' I can't understand how anyone can distinguish between songs to convey any sense of likes/dislikes and preferences.
What caught my eye more was a couple of the user comments, in particular: "I like to watch 3 guys 1 hammer to this song." Unfortunately I get the impression he (or yes, possibly she) isn't being at all facetious. |

I agree, I literally hate that type of music. I'd do a LOT to not have to listen to it.
It's sad that people are so nasty to urban artists, when there's some such worse music around. However, as others have mentioned, different people like different music. Only the really generic music (e.g. Lady Gaga's songs) can ever get really popular. |

I watched the link - didn't have a particular problem with the music itself, but the guy's voice was like he was either possessed or from outer space!
![]() Think they seriously need to get a new lead singer.

I occasionally listen to music which is noisy but buried beneath the noise is a tune or melody of some sort. My son listens to some of the death metal stuff and to my ears it is just noise - the guitars just seem to grind along on one note and the "singer" growls in a similar monotone.
Having said that I'd still rather listen to Cannibal Corpse than Lady Gaga or any of the other popular but utterly dull stuff which clogs up the singles charts these days. At least hardcore metal tries to convey a sense of emotion (usually anger haha) whereas most chart music leaves me utterly cold. |

See I hate threads like this, because it usually involves the OP (through no fault of their own) posting THE most extreme version of metal possible, and everyone else then begins to tar all metal with the same brush - mindless noise, yada yada yada.
I love heavy-metal but hate Cannibal Corpse, as they're part of an extreme sub-genre known as 'death metal'. It's not my thing at all. It's liked by only a very small minority of people; Cannibal Corpse have been going for since 1988 and sold around 3 million records (estimated), making them the highest selling death metal band of all-time. Compare that to Metallica and Iron Maiden, who have been going for roughly the same period of time, but have sold over 100 million records, or even Megadeth who have sold 25 million, and they're pretty much the Marmite of metal. So that gives you an idea how few people, even those who consider themselves heavy-metal fans, like bands such as Cannibal Corpse. But please, don't think all metal sounds like this. Check out Iron Maiden, Nightwish, some Metallica stuff, Avenged Sevenfold for the more melodic side of the genre. |

I often like the "toned down" metal sound, mainly because my favourite act is Skunk Anansie and they transition from a kind of metal sound to ballad so seamlessly, but I really dislike this stuff which is just shouting with "chug, chug, chug" guitars. However, as ags_rule, the OP's example is an extreme one and metal is as diverse as pop in many ways.

alot of people like Death Metal because the vocals are usually something they can emulate and the songs are challenging to play, I don't like it mainly because the vocals lack melody but I dislike alot of pop more now because it's too boring and dull for me give me a sludgy guitar playing harmonics anyday over a generic dance beat.

Now that is a great name for the singer of this band. ![]() I do like the occasional heavy track such as 'Please Don't Touch' by Motorhead & Girlschool - that to me is brilliant.
