It's a shame the inevitable comparison with John Sargent has happened, but as I said, it was inevitable. No doubt the popular press, devoid of any original thinking, will drum up some such for her, but I don't think it's necessary. Also, since the Sargent debacle made such a wreck of the show all for the sake of his desperate publicity machine, I really hope nothing like that ever happens again. It truly sucked and detracted from the show greatly. I'd rather have Arlene than a million John Sargents.
Having said that, I'm really hoping Anne is a different kettle of fish. She's older than average and she isn't a great dancer nor ever likely to be. There, I hope, the comparison should end.
Apart from being a grade A person, Anne obviously has a sense of humour and an ability for self-mockery that is natural, hasn't had to be coaxed by a media machine as John's was, appears natural and largely unrehearsed and I doubt for one minute that Anne will be pathetic enough to play anything as sickening as the "public will save me" card.
Anne can take all this with an enormous dose of humour and Anton is the perfect partner for her in this. I hope to see them stay for as many weeks as there are still "non-dancers" in the show. If the public keep her in then I hope she will stay and not resign in a flurry of pathos and self-glorification the way that JS did (may he never darken my screen again).
