Is there any way I can get my cat to stop following me to people's houses?

I was round my neighbour's house earlier and the cat appeared on the windowsill, obviously he had followed me there. I wouldn't normally mind but said neighbour is allergic to cat hairs

Aww my Winnie wouldn't follow me anywhere! unless it was to her food bowl first thing in the morning, then she wants nothing more to do with me for the rest of the day.

How long have you had your cat? Were they a rescue?

Possibly afraid that you'll abandon them

My cat does this and it's such a pain. She darts across the road, so dangerous, silly thing! I just have to pick her up and put her in if she is about when I am leaving otherwise she will follow me. She's just nosey, that's all. So I'd say just take her home and leave her in if it keeps happening or else try to go out when she's away somewhere and can't see you!

Maybe he had followed you but it is also possible that your neighbour's house is just a part of his outside territory and he goes there at other times but neither you nor your neighbour have noticed.

Did your neighbour said they hadn't seen him before?.

If he doesn't frequently turn up when you go to people's houses I would guess you just both happened to be there at the same time

Shows how much he loves you and doesn't like it being alone, cats are very cute.

My kado always follows me. Like you if we goes to the neighbours he comes with us. His mate is a neighbours cat and there always together. this one day we went for a bbq at my friends house out kado appears comes in the conservitry and decides to have a wee in there litter tray infront of everbody covers it up and walks out. My neighbours are not bothered at all he sometimes comes in when i am cat sitting for them. He follows me to the shop, post office bus stop and school even the chip van there he likes there fish. If he cant see me he cries sulks then goes back. The only thing you can do is either keep you cat inside, throw some biscuits on the floor. use another door use your car or run realy fast so he cant catch you.

When I was akid our cat puss used to do this, if we took the dogs out to the park she'd come, if she saw me walking to school she'd also come to school then sit outside the gate all day sometimes waiting for me, if we went to a neighbours she'd turn up. This seemed ok till one day we went through the park to go shopping in town and puss decided to come also, mum picked her up and we started to walk back home and she leapt out my mums arms and ran off in a huff. We spent 2 weeks looking for her to no avail then a neighbour came over and said puss was in her garden under a bush, we were over joyed until we saw her, poor little thing was almost dead covered in sores and abcesses so thin and frail. Spent a fortune at the vets getting her healed, but considered oursleves lucky that she came back.
Ever since then if one of the cats ever tried to follow us we'd always go back home and put the cat away.

Haha, one of my kittens follows me EVERYWHERE around the house.... and now you've just made me think that once she's allowed out she's going to follow me forever. Bless her.

same with me I'll leave my kitten curled up on a chair and the moment she sees me going down stairs shes up in a flash and passed me then when i COME UP STAIRS AGAIN she follows me up. At the moment she also is not allowed out but when she is I hope she just stays in the back garden and dosen't go out front. My other cat who spends a lot of his time sleeping in the garden shed always seems to appear at the front door just as we are locking it to go out . Although he mostly gose and finds a nice comfy spot to lie down he dose occasionaly follow me a short way up the road.

funny how your cats can completely ignore you for the whole day then get all lovey dovey as soon as it's time for their tea..

If I leave the house to go to work and she sees me, I have to take her inside or else she'd follow me to work O_O

How do you stop someone else's cat from following you?

I have a few cats come for treats each day, but one has started following me down the road, if I'm on foot; or galloping down the road after me, if I try and get away on my bike! She has no road sense whatsoever and the only way I can get away is to take the car!

She's been visiting for a few months, but only started this in the past month or so. I did remove a thorny plant head that was matted into the fur under her arm a couple of weeks back. It must've been causing her a lot of discomfort. Maybe that set her off?

I think she also might have been a rescue cat and maybe has abandonment issues. She had a collar on saying she was chipped, so she does/did have an owner. But she's here from 6am-late evening every day.

The only thing I can think of is to stop feeding her. But it's hard when she's wowing with her nose pressed against the window all day!

When the good weather comes back, I want to get back out on the bike - without having to outrun the cat to the end of the road!

My 2 are both indoor cats and follow me every where in the house. They will both wait outside the bathroom when im in the loo or having a shower. I have thought of renaming them Klingon and Velcro

They also wait for me to come home from work (i work nights) they literally wait at the door. My flatmates have said they will often sit there for hours.

If she is chipped then a vet should be able to trace her owner, she may be lost.

Our latest cat we 'acquired' we took to the vets to see if he was chipped, he wasn't. We put a notice in the local shop but no one claimed him so he's now part of the fixtures and fittings...

Since she's been coming here, the blue plastic "I am chipped" collar has been replaced by a flea collar, so I think she's still "owned".

Just not by someone as big a soft touch as I am!

For the moment, I have the option of putting food down in the back yard and sneaking out the front door. Noisy, noisy door! But don't know how long that will last before she twiggs!

Just to let you know what I'm up against, with her abnormally loud lungs - and to try my newly opened Photobucket thingy:

Might as well admit it - you have a cat.

I think you might be right, lorry! She's just been in for a "security check" of the lower floor. No rash decisions though! Me, not her!

Haha . Our cat cries similary. I call it howling. She follows me around the house a lot too. When we let her out in the garden and stay in the house, she'll come running in howling at us, I think she wants us to come out and play with her.

I have two cats: A mother Siouxsie Sioux (4) & her son Gonzo (1.5). I dont know much about her past other than she was acquired by the cat protection league from an elderly cat lady who had too many to look after. The boy is fine, but mother is 'a worrier' and a definite lap cat. When I go to work, if shes awake, she will still try to follow me, treating it abit like a game, but obviously, I dont want her anywhere near a front road. I bought a scooter, so I can make a clean getaway now, but if I decide to walk anywhere, my suggestion is to buy a food they adore (in my case its co-op alaskan cod roes) and put it out just before you go, also, have the door ready, off the latch, so you can leave immediatly without faffing around for your keys, wallet bags etc! Thats my only suggestion!
Just forgot, I also have a water spritzer to spray her, if she follows, but, she became used to that!
