You need to convert them in to a format the PS3 likes...

There's something wrong there. I play *.MP4 files on my PS3 all the time without a problem.

That means nothing; MP4 is just a container, like AVI or MKV. It can contain any variety of different codes, some of which the PS3 will like and some it won't. It's impossible to gemeralise and say the PS3 plays MP4s.

OP, I would run the files through Handbrake - that can convert them into a format the PS3 will understand.

Sony like the rest aren't that big on diverse format support.
Its their way or the highway....

If I used handbrake would the 720p quality be maintained?
I was only considering the PS3 as stepping stone to displaying the video. Is there any other means of viewing the files directly from my HTC Desire?

Thanks for the help

....recompression is recompression, there will always be some quality loss.

Apparently HTC are meant to be bringing out a medialink to connect the Desire HD to HDTVs. Not sure if it will connect other HTC phones though.

Its why HDMI could become quite standard on phones.

Quite shocking that most top range phones can record 720p holiday videos yet do not give HDMI output.
