I admit I dislike the software though. The big phones from these two were the Satio/Vivaz and Omnia HD.

I wonder if this move is to roll the carpet out for more crappy Android phones?

Nokia already stopped using it in high end too I believe.

Symbian is Open Source now, like android, so i can't understand the big ditch, perhaps "crappy" android is proving a bigger mover of units. :sleep:

At the end of the say Samsung want to make what sells. Their Android phones are probably more successful then the Symbian models. They also have Windows Phone 7 models coming.

In a way the smart phone OS battle is simply an extension of the PC OS battle.

The IPhones IOS 4 was developed from Mac OS10.

Windows Mobile 7 was developed from Windows.

Android was developed from Linux.

The Blackberry is the odd one out as it was written from scratch to work on a smart phone. Saying that its built on JAVA so you could argue its from the Sun camp who produce the Solaris OS.

Symbian is an evolution of Epoc, Psions old OS.

In the PC OS competition, one is dominant, one is exclusive and one is free.

Both IOS and Blackbery OS are unlikely to proliferate on to other manufacturers devices. My guess would be If consumers don't want the prestige of an IPhone or the Business friendly blackberry, they will go for an android phone as they don't have to relearn everything from scratch and it is constantly being updated and supported by Google.

Windows Phone 7 will act as an alternative to Android, although its not going to have the success Windows has on the PC.

Symbian belongs to an era when phone were phones and not portable computers with phone features. Nokia needs to move on now. If MeeGo is a runner fine, but otherwise they will probably go for Window phone 7.

Nokias stated aim several years back, in the days of the N800/N810 (ie. the predecessors to the N900 and Meego) was that the higher end would be taken by Maemo/Meego.

Doesn't mean that Symbian itself isn't high end - it is. What other smartphone has full multi tasking, and there isn't a cameraphone on the market that can rival the N8. HDMI output, 720p video recording, USB OTG support - the selection of features just isn't matched on any other device.


This is typical of the tripe thats being posted all around the web of late, ill-informed opinion that has no basis in reality.

Symbian is a damn fine phone OS, the only thing thats really lacking is some finesse in the UI elements.

I've now had a week using Android, have an iPod Touch and a Nokia 5230. Symbian is still the only one that supports full multi tasking in a sensible, easy to use manner. Each is easy to navigate and use. Anyone who has problems with the UI of symbian probably has problems breathing.

Erm nope.....Windows Phone 7 is more or less an entirely new code base. It is based on Silverlight. Windows Mobile was based on Windows Desktop OS. Where as programs from Desktop Windows could potentially be loaded and used on Win Mobile, however it isn't the case with Windows Phone as it is a completely new development platform.

I thought it was an evolution of the CE codebase previously used, just with a totally re-worked UI. Microsoft finally admitting that the Win95 user interface just doesn't work on a mobile. Could have told them that back in the CE2.0 days (had an LG Phenom, nice little toy).

What do great hardware specifications have to do with Symbian though? I would buy the N8 in a flash if it wasn't crippled by such poor software.

Nokia are first class in developing hardware but don't have a clue when it comes to software.
