More like the
Spoiler
Celestial Toymaker
... and that;s specualtion, so I'm not sure it really qualifies as needing a spoiler tag!

I'm going with who the op says. It makes the most sense. And there's me assuming Gaiman would do a totally contained episode, maybe even something very non-Who.

But the person the OP is referring to wasn't a friend of the Doctor!

Well the character is female and described as an old friend, so that rules out quite a few people.

I don't think it could be Susan or any other relative of the Doctor as it seems odd to desribe your relative using the term 'old friend'. Also don't think it could be the Rani as she is definately not a friend of the Doctors.

Off the top of my head the only two people that are both female, have the possibility to have a new face (regenerate) and are an old friend and of the Doctors are Romana and Donna.

Again, though, she is a relative - so it would be strange to call her an old friend.

I'm thinking it's more likely to be a retconned 'friend', one we've never met before.

And the heavy hint that she has a new face could mean anything - other than a regeneration. It's far too heavy a hint for that (all only IMHO, of course).

Maybe it's Margaret Slitheen! he sent her back as an egg and she was very grateful. Maybe she is now working with the doctor but still kills for a human body!

You could call The Rani an old friend of the Doctors as they were friends at the Academy.

Would they really have the Master becoming female though?

I suppose it is possible as SM himself has said regarding Idris
Quote:
“The startling truth about Idris' new soul - even the Doctor doesn't believe her!”

Her being a reincarnated Master could well fit that.

Another possibility I've seen speculated is that Idris is a rebodied Astrid.

Given the presence of
Spoiler
menacing dolls
, I would assume that the
Spoiler
Toymaker
is a fair assumption, albeit an unlikely one

The
Spoiler
Dolls
are in Mark Gatiss' episode not Gaimans.

Spoiler
The Welsh meaning of the name "Idris" is composed of "iud" (lord or master) and "ris" (meaning fiery, ardent, implusive...or possibly running?) according to the internet.

As I was searching for spoilers, I came across this:

http://www.imdb.com/news/ni4433651/

There's a link to DS but that page no longer exists.

I can't believe someone convinced DS that Adam Rickitt was going to play a character called "Ben" in this episode.

Its the toymaker I think , I think there using Gaiman to bring back the Toymaker, Black and white guardian. I also think the house in the episode might be a dollhouse

Okay for me the most interesting thing there is the association with The War Games.....and well I am quite pleased about that...its a fantastic story....so could it be possible that whoever this character is...its do do with that story????

I just got Fiery Lord as a translation, was there any fire related Timelords in the first Doctor's reign?

Added to the hint from the Brilliant book of DW

Quote:
““How could a fellow Gallifreyan stoop so low?””

I do wonder
Spoiler
if this Old Friend of the Doctor does something similar to the War Chief from the War Games and uses Time Lord Technology to help some alien race do something evil.
