Google TV
Anyone know or have any idea if this is coming to the UK?
Apparently it seems that its only in Sony TV's? I hope it branches out as Sony TVs are bloody expensive and the stand alone product of google TV is already $300 which is what, £250 over here. looks brillaint though, i watch alot of youtube so its right up my street. |

Needs a Intel Atom chip with Android OS in TVs and STBs
Logitech have announced the STB in the US! http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10...ech_google_tv/ No UK date and Sony might just go for Youview in the UK rather than the Google TV spec! Will be interesting to see if it is one of the companies applying for the Youview licence, the advantage Youview has over Google TV is that you can tie in into a ISP like BT vision to get a class of service and better IPTV quality, but unless Google joins Youview it will not be so good for video content searches! |

Google TV is basically an improved search engine for Youtube for the TV screen which must be a good thing as it gives people to make and share their own videos (within the limits of taste or they get removed)!, but is also getting more content from commercial companies! Notice details of the Sony TVs are now released in the US! http://www.pcworld.com/article/20764...ml?tk=rss_news Quote:
The Google TV navigation, on-screen menus, and results screens mirror the features seen in the Revue. While the Revue comes with a full-size or mini Logitech keyboard, the Sony Internet TVs have their own style of mini keyboard, which feels a lot like a game controller. It's not backlit, but accompanying the keyboard are two control pads: a touchpad on the right for navigating Websites, and a mechanical rocker-switch pad on the left for navigating when the set is tuned in to broadcast content. The rocker switch operates like the directional buttons on a DVD remote. Still no news if Sony or Logitech will sell the sets or STBs in the UK!
The controller is very lightweight and I found it very easy to learn and to manipulate. It has the feel of a PlayStation remote for a good reason. "Some design elements were borrowed from the PS3," Abary said. The new 24-inch ($600), 32-inch ($800), 40-inch ($1000), and 46-inch ($1400) Sony Internet TVs and the new Sony Internet Blu-ray player ($400) can be preordered now and will be available at Sony Style this week and at Best Buy on October 24. |

I don't use Google on my computer, I block every single Google advert and Google cookies. i even block their analytics. I don't use any google services apart from now and again You tube and that is now and again and I block cookies from there as well.
I don't trust google on my computer, so why on earth would I trust them in my lounge? |

Apparently it seems that its only in Sony TV's? "Google TV" (which is probably a bad name) is a "platform" - ie, its not just one device, but its something which will be in many devices over time. Google are essentially doing with this like they did with the Android telephones, Logitech and Sony got a head start (probably bait to get them to play along ) - but from next year anybody else can start including the "Google TV" system in other devices as long as they follow some requirements (for instance there must be HDMI input and output).I would expect to see these things pop up all over Europe next year. Also it has the Chrome browser - meaning it will display internet pages (they say "all of the internet"), so you could bookmark Iplayer and watch it on the TV that way - unless the BBC block them for some reason ( which would be unnecessary since you can't "cheat", it uses your internet connection so if you are in the UK you can use the IPlayer, if you are outside the UK you can't - the consumption medium shouldn't be relevant) Thirdly, and more interestingly, its operating system is Android, and early next year they will add the Android Market - that means most of the programs already made for Android telephones will run on the TV - everything from bit torrent clients to media players, or even twitter clients ![]() Quote:

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean everybody else is - the millions of Android phones sold prove otherwise. As for people using the Android phone, i bet most of them don't know what they got and how much info Google try and grab. Google is just too powerful and want to know everything about you so they can chuck adverts at us. Adverts I don't mind, I know we have to have then to keep some sites running, but when it is dominated by one company and that company uses any way it can to gain more information about you then that is wrong. No doubt it will take longer to use the app than using a normal remote. Quote:

No one is afraid of Apple, why should they be? But at the end of the day if apple don't want a Google App on their phones they will stop them. To be honest Android and Apple phones are just over hyped, The Iphone is over priced and like other touch screen phones both are a pain in the neck to use in sun light. I got myself a cheap touch screen phone just to see if I would like it, I won't get another, prefer proper keys |

In the households I know everybody has at least once phone each, some of us more than one.But i guess it would be more like to be an Android Table that would be popular for that. Quote:

Exactly - adverts - they don't want to steal your money or bomb your house

They don't use 'any way' the use obvious legal ways available to them .
Only just, They are getting too big and want to know everything about everyone, they even take pictures of peoples housesI think google Street view was the last straw for me, they went too far and don't care about other peoples privacy. Quote:
What, you only have one phone? In the households I know everybody has at least once phone each, some of us more than one.
i only have one phone, I don't need loads as it is only I that lives here. even if there was more than one phone in the house not everyone got a Iphone or Android phone, so you still need to keep the remote around. it would be nice if there was a decent remote that could do everything at a decent price, as I got far too many remotes. But I don't think i would use a phone to control my t.v or any other device. Quote:
But i guess it would be more like to be an Android Table that would be popular for that.
i have used a Android phone and yes it is ok to use, but knowing that Google have something to do with it would put me off getting oneQuote:
It might, it depends on what needs to be done - if you want to enter any text you can just speak it, that would probably be faster than typing.
voice recognition is still hit and miss, but if they could get it working 100%, then I would prefer it to typing text messages, something i hate doing.Quote:
For a few things i prefer to have physical keys, but for most things touch screen works fine for me.
I know my phone was cheap and I am not expecting it to have the same sensitivity as say the Iphone, but when I put my finger on the screen for a certain letter, I don't expect the phone to display the one next to it.It will do for a few months, then I will go and get another one or get my old Samsung unlocked. As for Google T.V, I think I will leave well alone. |

Noise, do you ever wake up happy, you know, happy with things in general or are you a born moaner? Were you the type of child who pulled the legs off spiders?
Nothing wrong with disagreeing with just about everything judging by your posts in general but how about a bit more 'IMHO' instead of 'its crap because I say so' ? |

Problems in the US getting content! http://www.downloadsquad.com/2010/10...npage_engadget Quote:
Google has entered into negotiations with three major TV networks -- ABC, NBC and CBS -- to allow Google TV users to access streaming TV episodes on the network websites. The three networks currently block their full-length episodes from Google TV, and a fourth network, Fox, is reportedly considering blocking Google TV as well. Meanwhile, cable channels, including HBO and Turner Broadcasting, have embraced Google TV, offering access to hundred of hours of shows. In the UK Sky now has exclusive use of HBO content!
Industry analysts say the sticking point for ABC, NBC and CBS is the fear that Google will take over TV advertising the same way it rules Web advertising. Reports haven't said what Google is offering the networks to get them to reconsider, but it's possible Google TV's selection of episodes from the big three networks could be smaller than what's on the websites right now. |

Google have a business model that is philanthropic in tactics.
Much of the stuff is quite incredible, especially with Android. And personally I keep getting forced back to googling when other search engines keep returning complete b**l**ks |

Only a mistake because they got caught. I will stay with Bing search engine, not perfect, but it does the job and keeps me away from Google. |

Only noise747 ( name possibly a swipe at how noisy the planes are going over his house?) could refuse to use anything Google are affiliated with. I honestly try and look at thing from his point of view reasoning that he could be right about some of it, but even then the only reasonable explanation is he must simply hate any successful company.
Google are offering people a product which they seem to want (I certainly would like GoogleTV and enjoy using Chrome and YouTube) and if that makes them successful then they are doing it right. Maybe noise does have the right Idea and Google want to control us all, well if it's gonna happen let's enjoy the product that goes along with it. |

Google are offering service that people think they want. You tube have cased a lot of hassle for people, because it gives a easy outlet for idiots to beat up some poor person or set fire to something and for it to be put on display.i agree there are no doubt some useful stuff on you Tube, I have used it for Tutorials for Vegas, but i make sure that there is no way I can be tracked, so no cookies and browser add ons to get rid of other google spying rubbish. i don't use Chrome, but I do use Iron, which is based on chromium. Chrome without the spying rubbish. Apart from that I don't see anything else that Google does i need to use. Quote:

I've not come across Iron before and am not perticularly aware of security risks associated with Chrome but may look into it. I still like the idea of Google TV. |
