They release "Night Work" a massive return to form after the below average Elton John-esque Ta-Dah! reaches #2 and drops like a stone. Lead single Fire With Fire only made #12 and the follow up Any Which Way failed to make the top 75 last week #81!!!!
What has gone wrong - too many fans jump ship cos of Ta Dah! or are we going the way of the States and becoming COMPLETELY ruled by shitty R&B

I just think falsetto voiced songs aren't very popular at the moment, people are fed up with Bee Gees and Mika sounds?

Tis a shame cos Night work is their best yet, and 'Any which way' is a fantastic (also commercial) pop song. I think they took too long to release their album, and lost momentum. You dont take sabbaticals until you get to your 3rd/4th album! Hopefully, they'll do well in other territories.

I would say it's their worst. Ta-Dah wasn't that good either but their self-titled is astoundingly good.

I don't think they have the appeal they had when they released their self titled.

I am not surprised this has happened at all. Night Work was a great album in my view (doesn't top their debut but it's still massively enjoyable) but it was never going to be as huge as their first 2 albums.

I had a big discussion about this on another website. I would copy and paste my views in full here, but it's very long, way too long.

Put simply, it's the way the charts work these days. Scissor Sisters were huge before, but taking 4 years between albums is what did for them. Most people had moved on and/or forgotten about them. It's not their fault - they've just become another victim of the fickle nature of many music buyers in this country. If Night Work was released in 2007 (the year after Ta-Dah went out) it would of been massive, no question.

I'm don't like them or this type of music but they have been away for a long time. These days you can't be taking 4 years off and expect to do well anymore. Like Kutox said, people move on and forget about you. The same thing happened to Xtina. I haven't even heard anyone mention the Scissors at all for a long long time.

They've only been away for so long because they had to make a whole new album after recording a more interesting one that the record company/management weren't happy with.

If they've flopped it's not because people have forgotten about them, it's the opposite, people got sick of them and didn't want them back with the same old schtick. It would have been a much better idea to return with singles that felt like a progression.

I think fire with fire is a great track so i dont know why that didnt sell as well. Although the album is good, there hasnt been enough promo for it. They have been away for far too long and who knows when the next album will be out, 2014/15? Maybe fans dont want to wait that long.

They need to release another album next year and have a stab at getting come commercial ground back again.

Yes I agree with that, the only thing I would say is that if Ta-Dah hadn't been so hit & miss, Night Work wouldn't have been a good album (if you see what I mean).

Any Which Way is a huge single for them, but a lot depends on whether Kylie is promoting it with them.

I think that this should have been either the lead single or released far quicker.

I'm not saying this is definately the reason, but despite loving all 3 albums I personally don't like most of their single choices.

Land of a Thousand Words, Kiss You Off, She's My Man and Any Which Way were definately not the strongest tracks from their respective albums.

I listened to their single on the radio, and thought it was 2005 again. They haven't moved on sadly.

I think, in these difficult times people are being more cautious before they buy an album/single. SS have lost a bit fo ground in the 4 year absence and come back without a standout hit. They are not the only artists in this position.

It's kinda worrying after how well I Don't Feel... did and other great songs. I hope this isn't the fading part of their career. But Night Work did quite good, getting to No.2 and staying in the charts for a lot of the Summer

Indeed. They've only had 3 singles go top 10 (out of 12 released), but their albums chart higher. Of course, chart positions don't = success because they need to retain some level of popularity.

I believe their live shows do very well, though, and that's where most of the money is made.

I don't like the Scissor Sisters, but they're seemingly an album band, which automatically makes them more credible

Kylie does backing vocals on the new single.

But I know what you mean.

Kylie didn't record any backing vocals, she just joined them on stage to perform a song with them, however there is a Kylie sample on the album, blink (your ears) and you'll miss it!

I just think they lead with a bland single and that's done the damage, had they released the two singles in the opposite order things could have been a whole lot better, sadly the best song on the album (Invisible Light) just wouldn't work as a single, which is a crying shame!

Kylie did record backing vocals for Any Which Way. You can hear her towards the end and she's credited.

I agree with you about the lead single, I personally didn't care much for it on release and I haven't really warmed to it since, Any Which Way on the other hand is pretty good, in fact it's the song that prompted me to buy the album.

I think Invisible Light would have made an excellent single, not sure how it would fare chart wise but I think it certainly would have changed public perceptions of the group.

Releasing an album after one single these days is a big mistakes. Not everyone can get away with it now, especially not gimmick acts like Scissor Sisters. The music buisness changes rapidly, and you can't go away for a few years and come back with one single and then expect your album to be a success.

The Hoosiers are another example. Huge a few years ago, then 'Choices' went to #11 this year and bombed, and the album spent like four weeks in the top 100. Kate Nash bombed as well. OneRepublic as well. Same will probably happen to Ting Tings when they release.
