I thought the last great year for music was 2007 but its been quite eclectic this year with some great albums. I'm quite impressed

you've had fantastic bands like Tame Impala and Beach House picking up where MGMT and Empire Of The Sun left off with the whole hippy, dream pop vibe

Janelle Monae pushing the boundaries of R&B/Neo Soul with her pretty flawless album "The ArchAndroid" why this women isn't revered as a creative force as much as her less talented or interesting peers is beyond me

Dubstep or whatever you want to call it is basically the new pop music which is fine by me, as long as Skream, Benga, Artwork and Katy B keep banging out tunes as great as "I Need Air" and "Katy On A Mission" then I'm sold

we've also had Laura Marling and Joanna Newsom representing the singer songwriter corner with some beautifully written lyrics and arrangements on their respective albums

We've also had the "weird but infectious" album from These New Puritans, I'm in shock it wasn't nominated for the mercury prize as its the exact sort of record the panel fuss over

and finally some great follow up albums from the likes of Interpol, Vampire Weekend, Crystal Castles, Klaxons, Gorillaz, Arcade Fire, Yeasayer and Foals.

a notable mention for Darwin Deez and his album aswell

music is not dead! its alive and well!

I think it's been one of the worst years of music I've experienced. I don't like any of the bands you mentioned.

2009 for me was miles better. Hopefully the next 2 and a half months will have some sort of redemption for this year.

EDIT: I have discovered loads of new music from the 70's, 80's and 90s this year though. More than 100. It's just the music actually made and released in 2010 that has been rubbish.

With a few exceptions, it's been one of the worse for me for a long time, on record and live. I've seen NO live music this year! My last was in November 2009 and that's rare for me! I am usually a whore for going to gigs.

It's almost the end of the year now and the only albums I have liked this year have been:

- Skunk Anansie - Wonderlustre
- Goldfrapp - Head First
- M.I.A. - /\/\ /\ Y /\

And those weren't the act's best works, either (possibly some of their weakest work in fact).

There's been a few disappointments for me, too, such as MGMT, Klaxons and Massive Attack.

I don't think its been great tbh. Theres been a few albums I've really got into, but 2009 was better for music imo. Its all felt a bit 'meh' to me. A lot of the singles that have been released just sound the same, of course there are exceptions.

I have however got into a few bands this year because of singles they have released eg. Mumford and Sons, their single that was released this year 'The Cave' made me buy the album, which I think is excellent. There has been some good stuff, but overall its not been amazing I don't think.

2010 has been an excellent year for albums. And Janelle Monae? I'm gonna go out on a limb and say she's the best female artist in the world right now. Truly sensational.

Not one of the best, but then 2009 was such a benchmark year that it would take a huge event to make 2010 even match 09.

In 2009, we had the arrival of Lady Gaga and a groundbreaking album from the Black Eyed Peas, plus the death of Michael Jackson, to name just a few events.

That's not to say I have no favourite new artists from 2010. At the moment, that list is topped by Bruno Mars.

I can't say I agree. Its been an OK year, but the first year in a long time when there's not been a real stand-out album for me. There's been some very good albums (e.g. M.I.A, Kelis, Robyn, Diana Vickers), but nothing that I'd call a classic. But I think thats just because I'm into more pure pop, whereas most of the pop albums this year have been dance-pop or indie-pop. Also there's been a higher than usual amount of really disappointing albums this year.

Don't get me wrong, its been a fairly good year, but nothing compared to 2005 or 2007 for me.

Best in years for rock and metal music. Great albums from:

Iron Maiden
Avenged Sevenfold
Bullet For My Valentine
Gogol Bordello
The Pretty Reckless
Slash
Apocalyptica

And some solid offerings from Tarja, Disturbed, Ozzy Osbourne and Black Label Society.

Best three years for music this decade: 2010. 2008, 2006

2009 had some amazing albums but the overall quality of this years albums beat it hands down.

There's still over 2 months left guys

I think it's been pretty terrible this year, a lot of my favourite bands are bringing out albums in 2011 though so I've got high hopes for next year.

I think this year's been absolutely awful for music. I'm not a big fan of the charts but week after week after week we get a brand new No1. Does any song stay at No1 for more than just a week? It just goes to show how disposable music is these days and people will buy any utter rubbish!

Yeah the chart music now is getting more disposable and losing quality as time goes by, it's nothing new it's just getting worse. However if you look past it it's a completely different story. Album wise this year has had consistently good releases and with variety. It's been my personal favourite year for music in a while.

No, it hasn't been a good year especially with the British charts becoming even more bland and homogenized. For the best part of the year there's just been R'n'B, rap and even most pop music (especially American pop) throws in a rapper or two for a verse of the song to make it 'current'.

A lot of the artists and songs that don't fit into the criteria above struggle to get airplay and those that do will just about break into the Top 40, only to fall out again after a week or two. What's worrying is that a lot of these types of artists are now using a performance on X Factor to guarantee them a top 10 place in the charts. Why do the public decide they like something just because they've seen it on XF? I really hope that the rumour about the contestants having the covers they performed on the show every week getting released as downloads was false. Can you just imagine it?

I look at the music industries and charts in other countries and there is a much wider variety of music that is popular. I wish it was like that here. Oh well.

It's been a great year for music and albums. The first few months of this year especially saw loads of high class albums getting released.

Alkaline Trio - This Addiction
Coheed & Cambria - Year Of The Black Rainbow
Fears - 3am, The Beautiful, The Bittersweet
Melissa Auf Der Maur - Out Of Our Minds

Its been a good year for music.. Shame the superchavs have had shite excel in the charts for the past 3 years so the good music tends to be overlooked.

Music hasn't been consistently good since 2006, and it's just getting worser every year. I miss cheesy pop songs, at least it made the charts fun back then.

Ohwell we still have a shit load of songs from the the past to listen to, many i haven't heard/recently discovered

Not been a particularly eyebrow-raising year yet though

I am kind of happy that 90% of this thread says it has been a pretty shit year for music! I thought I was just growing old and miserable, but it seems others agree it's been a pretty shit year for music in most genres!

Great year? I have to disagree.
Not a massive fan of r&b and autotuned music but it seems to be in almost every genre now.
