I can't believe this, if the performances can actually chart then it's gonna kill the charts for months! The top 10 will all be X-factor covers all year, giving no other artists (with more talent) a chance to get a good position.

This is ridiculous!!

I'm not happy about it either. So it's not enough that people who perform each week generally go top 5 because of the X Factor.

On the other hand, it might mean that the original artists get airplay too.

I see X Factor as an entertainment program rather than a show that produces stars.

I can't stand Cowell.

I'm fine with them being available to download but I too really hope they aren't allowed to chart. It will be impossible for another artist to get no 1 from October - December.

I'd love for it to be like that, but you know what Cowell is like.

I really hope the rumours of him recieving a knighthood aren't true. A knighthood for what, exactly?

It really is ridiculous. If they can chart we're going to have the biggest stars in the world struggle to get into the top 10.

Why is anyone surprised? This is exactly what Cowell wants. He is desperate to control the charts in any way he possibly can - that's all he cares about.

If you watch X Factor then you're buying into this garbage. Maybe this will be the wake-up call that many deluded X Factor fans need.

If you're a music fan but you think XF is good then you have no right to complain.

It's not official yet that they can chart. We'll have to wait until tonight but i know for a fact they are downloadable from iTunes. If you make a campaign link it here and i'll join.

Another point I'd like to make. I thought the idea of X-Factor was that the winner becomes a recording artist and can then release music. Not that the final 12 all get to release their music weekly and chart in ridiculous positions!

Then you're missing the entire point of the show!

It won't be fair on other acts in the music business releasing stuff then. Like how Cheryl, Alex, JLS, Leona and Joe will dominate the charts only because of their performances in front of millions on the X Factor. If they released material in March then it wouldn't do so well. The chart becomes so predictable during the Auttumn

Looks like The Ting Tings won't get a No.1 then

I'm no big fan of X-factor - but the way some of you are talking, you'd think Simon Cowell was personally rigging the charts to ensure his acts hit the top.

If these songs are allowed to chart, and they get to number one, it's because people are more interested in buying them than they are buying songs by the "big stars".

The charts are not about taste or quality - just a reflection of what's been popular that week. If more people want to buy an x-factor act than an established name, they deserve to chart at the top.

X Factor is a massive cultural phenomenon at the moment, so it's no surprise if this is reflected in the charts. Fortunately, like all fads, it will pass - so just sit back and let it wash over you!

I completely disagree. It's not right. So you're saying, somebody who just sings a cover of somebody elses song infront of millions of people, deserves success over an artist who has worked thier arse off for months on their own song?

Why on earth would I be? I'm a music fan. It's an entertaining show but what it does for music is despicable.

I don't see how anyone who's a fan of X Factor can complain about things like the live performances being available for download. Like I said before - if you watch the show then you're buying into this garbage. Anyone who thinks Cowell cares a jot about music is being well and truly taken for a fool.

But as long as people continue to watch the show, he'll keep finding ways of monopolising the charts for his own gain.

I watch the show and really like the show, but it doesn't mean i think the artists deserve instant success like these downloads are going to give them.

Yes I'm pretty sure they were, but with the way their charts work with airplay etc it would never distort the charts. MJs blog does a weekly rundown of their impact.

And it's just the music charts at the end of the day. In the grand scheme of things it's pretty unimportant.

That's exactly what i'm saying. The charts are not, and never have been, about "deserving" to be number one. At the end of the day, it's just a list of who sold the most singles that week. Deserving it doesn't come into it - it's just a reflection of what's popular.

You and I might not like x-factor acts - but for the next couple of months they will have more popularity than many other acts releasing singles at the same time. This will be reflected in the charts.
