who do you think are the most recognised female artists of today?
eggandbeans

By this I mean the biggest, most popular female artists..

I would say Beyonce, Rihanna, Ke$ha, Katy Perry and I think Nicki Minaj will eventually explode over here and hopefully be just as big as she is in the US.

Cheryl Cole will probs make an appearance on here but she's sh*te imo, so she doesn't quite do it for me.

Is there any others I've missed?

EDIT- How could I forget Lady Gaga!! oopsy

Britney (she's still around today, thought obviously she started in the '90s). Girls Aloud too, I would say.

I think it's almost certainly Lady Gaga, well, in the UK anyway.

It's MS GAGA TO YOU! Lmao, Gaga has changed the music business I think. Not dramatically, but enough to slightly notice a difference. One word. X factor..

I'd say Pink is pretty well known.

I'd say Fergie, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Rihanna and Beyonce, amongst teenagers in the UK at least. They've all been at #1 this year, except Rihanna, but she's on the highest selling song of the year, plus Rude Boy, which is in the top 10.

I was about to say Madonna /Kylie/ Mariah as even now everyone whether you're 12 or 80 knows you know who they are.

But I guess you're saying who are the Madonnas/Cyndi Laupers of this generation?

I guess Lady Gaga, Britney, Rihanna, Beyonce

Christina had the potential but she's kind of blew it - she didn't release stuff regulalrly and hasbn't built a proper back catalogue.

Pink's more like Debbie Harry famousness. Big but not Madonna superstardom (I love Pink though)

Katy Perry, I just think isn't really a long term project. She seems more of a celebrity than a singer if that makes sense.

I would have to say Rihanna and Gaga.

They are just everywhere and have been for a while now.

I'm hoping this doesn't descend into another female artist fan-off thread

Here's someone I hadn't heard of until recently but she can at least sing.

You may not have heard of Stefanie Heinzmann from Switzerland but here are a couple of her songs.

See what you think.

Yeah, I see what you mean. Though, to be fair, even if Katy Perry only gets one song as big as I Kissed a Girl and California Gurls every 2 years, she'll still be big.

I dunno, it's just that she hasn't been around for very long, but she seems so established already. Same goes with Lady Gaga, and to an extend, Ke$ha (she certainly will be if her next album is as popular as her current one). Some artists spend ages trying to get as established as them.

Janelle Monae even though she's not popular really should be up there.. she has more creativity in her little finger than all of the artists mentioned in this thread..

couldn't MORE disagree with your opinion! not exactly a nice comment either :/ nor have you stated WHY you may think this!

She's just such a funky and cool lady! it's what R&B should be! tell a story within your music etc. The ArchAndroid is EPIC it's like a film blockbuster! loves me some Janelle.

She NEEDS more recognition!

and of contemporary female musicians then for me it's - Britney (LEGEND!), P!nk,Rihanna and Christina Aguilera really! also Alicia Keys, Beyonce and Gaga deserve a mention.

Madonna is the definition of a living legend and icon i mean 4 decades alone speaks volumes! she gets many mimics and wannabe's out there, none can make an album, tour or video like Madonna a true inspirational lady.

but for contemporary artists that i feel have that recognition have to be-

Britney Spears, who has just grown a long way the past decade into an absolute Pop Icon and I am looking forward to see and hear what she is coming up with next! she has created some of the greatest pop albums and recordings the past decade alone! (baby One More Time, Britney, In The Zone and Blackout in particular!)

P!nk, Alicia Keys, Rihanna and Beyonce have grown the past decade from one artist to the next and have been re-introduced to new audiences and have had varied huge successes!

I actually agree.

I love innovation, I love good, soulful voices, and I love good music, but Janelle is just a "been done to death" singer. Many people could do what she's doing.

I won't deny her being a good singer, but there's so much more to music than that. Just because she wears a city on her head and has a weird album name doesn't make her different

I think you might be confusing that kind of "look at me I'm different" mentality with Lady Gaga... anyway I like Janelle because of how diverse her album is. I'm not even that interested in her voice, i love the production and the concept of her album, but your entitled to your opinion though.

When I read the thread title I have to say Madonna and Britney popped into my head. eggandbeans you have a lot answer for - I have no desire to think about that pair thank you very much! Also thought of Beyonce (too pretty for her own good that one!!)

I kind of agree with the person who sees Katy Perry more as a celeb than a singer. I see Cheryl Cole in this way too (I keep bliddy forgetting bout Girls Aloud and would describe her as 'yer doll off x-factor')

Really not sure bout Gaga and longevity. Not sure I could see her music holding it's own for 10-20 years and think it might be 'of the moment' . Does that make sense? There's only so much attention crazy styling can get a person before we have the 'seen it all before' attitude. There's been a telephone, and then there was the sirloin hat and half a pound of mince number. Unless she appears wearing an entire live cow I don't think I'll bat an eyelid

That said I've got her on my i-pod and would be up bopping away with the best of them if her songs are played on a saturday night!

Confession - I don't know who Janelle Monae is....*runs off to youtube to educate self

it's a really brilliant album isn't it? friggin' LOOOVE The ArchAndroid! Janelle is unusual in a really artistic and creative way, proper old skool stuff!!! love the woman!!!

right i have made myself a list of MY favourite female lists and comapred it to who is BIG now and will ALWAYS be remembered in the current climate as well as the future and i must say-

MADONNA, Britney Spears & P!nk are the HUGEST stars of the last decade and (in Madonna's case past 4 decades!) will always be remembered for what they have represented in pop music and the rock music world, P!nk and Britney have been honoured for their works and have got the respect they deserve and Madonna literally pushed the boundaries as one of the finest artists, entertainers and musicians of all time!

With more established back catalogue- Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Rihanna, Xtina, Janelle Monae, Florence Welch and (maybe) Avril Lavigne (not totally a fan though, i think she's going the Cyndi Lauper route tbh!)

and of course legends such as- Bjork, Annie Lennox, Stevie Nicks, Nina Simone, Rose Stone, Mama Cass and Karen Karpenter (to name a few!) will be remembered for their representations and against the grain works in their era!
