An independent review of Skys future IPTV on demand service....

Oh, you need to be a $ky broadband service user and need to be a $ky HD subscriber to use this. With no HD on demand content available...

This is from the 2nd of June, and has been discussed in the sky forums.

And what the the feeling from Sky users on this new service?

Not strictly true as Sky Anytime+ mixes seamlessly with the current Sky Anytime service.

So there will be up 500gb of HD content which is downloaded every-night onto the sky hd boxes separate hard drive partition. So new HD programmes and films are added every day and available to play instantly.

Ok, lets correct you on a few points.

1. yes, at launch you need to subscribe to Sky Broadband - this is however a temporary measure so they can iron out any problems strictly within their own Broadband system.

Once any problems are sorted, they do intend to roll it out to other ISP's.

2. You do NOT need to be a Sky HD subscriber to view the content, as at Launch virtually all of the content on the 'Anytime +' service will be SD - you will (possibly) however only be able to watch anytime+ programmes/content according to your relevant viewing mix.

3. There WILL of course still be the HD content on the 'Anytime' section, which does require an HD sub and relevant viewing mix, to watch it.

How do I feel about this as a Sky subscriber - not too bothered about it either way, really. I see Anytime and Anytime+ as additional bonus content, as Sky charge no extra sub for them. Of course what you can watch depends on your viewing pack and HD sub, but there will be a lot of content available that I can still watch, once it launches, should I wish to.

I would ask why you started a discussion about Sky Anytime+ here, a BT Vision forum, rather than the general IPTV forum, or the Sky Forum??

PS: I see the 'S' key on your keyboard is beginning to play up, like some other posters!

I see the mods have moved this to the IPTV forum.

It will be important to Sky in order to keep up with VM, BT and other providers video on demand services as there is a limit to how many programmes can be downloaded overnight.

The next aim will probably sign up as many BBC, ITV, ch4
ch5,etc programmes without Sky needing to sign up for youview but having the content!

Interesting Sky are using WiFi rather than powerline to connect the STB to the router which will keep the Shortwave users and radio hams happy!

It could be Sky will restrict the service to Sky broadband to keep a class of service for video streaming like BT does! Which also helps sell bundles!

this is a good move by sky.
my only gripe would be regarding the picture quality of the on demand films. don't know what they are on this service - but when i used films on Sky Player i found the quality to be poor-average at best.

Thats why Sky might restrict the service to Sky broadband to keep a high "class of service" quality giving video a priority over other internet traffic, some of the Netgear routers Sky have used might need to be changed to allow this!

aye - the integration into the HD box is supposed to be for Sky BB customers only.

the problem Sky Player has is bandwidth into other networks. across their own it'll be fine and not require a big change.

the interesting part now is how this "could" impact on Sky BB. got to wonder if this will have a negative impact on their regular BB users. if Video is prioritised then there's bound to be a point where people who previously were happy start to observe slow down or restrictions.

Agree.

As does Vision. This impacts on other BT BB users at the moment. But it won't when it becomes Youview.

BT and Talktalk are working on their own broadcast content networks with QoS!

no doubt Sky (easynet) will also be planning a content network as well!

The network's already been laid in my area.

And it's being rolled out to many others too.

Reading the Sky forum, up to today, the on demand Anytime+ Darwin software is still causing Sky boxes to lock-up/crash.

Reading the Sky forum again, up to today, the on demand Anytime+ Darwin software is now only causing the 1tb boxes to crash/lockup.

At least thats progress.
