I think we should have a thread to keep track of the number of threads specifically devoted to Alesha's speaking habits.

Because I've seen two new ones already today.

A thread about other threads

Or add something to this thread, a count of every time Matt Baker says "us" instead of "me" on this show and on Countryfile, which he presents.

Or maybe even recognise that both Alesha and Matt are just using the grammar of a particular UK dialect, that one is no better or worse than the other, and thus abandon this thread?

Am more than happy to abandon this thread but could you say more about the grammar of a dialect point? Surely WAS is wrong in any dialect?

I could forgive her bad grammar if anything she had to say added anything to the programme, but her comments are nothing but meaningless trite nonsense......'you came out and you did it, babe' etc. etc.
Why is she qualified to judge anyway?

A dialect is defined as a regional or social variety of a language with different pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar. Different, not better or worse. Alesha's English isn't bad, she's just speaking a different version of it. Exactly the same goes for Matt Baker. The most interesting question is why her dialect and his elicit such different reactions from people.

It's valid to criticise her judging, but not the way she expresses it.

Unless you want everyone in these islands to speak exactly the same way. "Free elocution for all Mr Cameron! It'll solve all our social problems".

I can't believe we now have Tina O'Brien as a contestant, who has an equally poor grasp of English Grammar. I also can't believe that Louise Rednapp was on ITT on Friday; her grammar is EQUALLY poor.

I'm getting quite sick of every other thread being a dig at Alesha's grammar by people who clearly have a superior attitude!

Can anyone on this thread honestly say they have never made a grammar mistake in their lives? I doubt it, so I don't really think anyone is in a position to criticise her for making a couple of mistakes every so often on the pressure of live TV where one can't re-record what is said.

There is, and always has been, a terrible prejudice against a London accent.

I presume the viewers who hold these prejudices see Matt Baker as a middle class presenter who has a slight regional "twang" and forgive him for it. Alesha, however, is working class and for that she might be thrashed regularly..... Stupid and prejudiced, but there.

Why would you think that "was" is wrong in any dialect. Regional dialects contain many departures from received speech. To be fair and balanced, you must lambast ANYONE who lets one pass their lips, and not just pick on Alesha and her London accent.

Twiggy, in her youth, was another Londoner who was regularly picked on grammatically by twittering hacks. She observed "Why am I the only one they interview, whose speech is printed in the vernacular?"

Grammar is perfctly legitimate as well, if it's written on an online grammar guide, it's good enough for me. I don't profess to have perfect grammar, hence why I don't criticise Alesha!

This drives me mad. I cant believe no one in the production staff have pointed this out to her. Some basic grammar lessons wouldnt go astray.

And yes 'was' is wrong in any dialect. It has nothing to do with region, accent, dialect, its just bad grammar, plain and simple.

Why is it considered so awful when Alesha says 'you was' when Len says it all the time and the mistake is ignored?

Hahahhaa!! Just want to say I really had to laugh at the title of this thread... Funny!
