Use a wide angle lens for star trails.

A much better way, for very vivid trails, try stacking.

I was in the Greenwich Observatory last week, and they had some amazing astronomical photos - most taken with DSLR's attached to telescopes.

Although a guy there pointed out the northern hemisphere pointed away from the heart of our galaxy, which is why we dont really see the milky way so well from here.
