Will someone please explain what truffles dug up from the ground by dogs are and why they are so valuable.
Call me naive but I really don't understand.

They taste like a very, very strong, rather nasty mushroom imo. Imagine a mushroom grown on a manure heap and not washed. It is always lucky to find that an incredibly expensive food isn't nice, as it means I never have to worry about paying for it. I don't like caviare either.

It's truly overrated and actually quite horrible - much like caviar.

I posted my response before I read yours and I agree.

Oh. Thanks Matheron and Pamelal.
They seem to have this image of being as much a delcacy as Caviare is. So it's all about rarity and not necessarilly taste.
I hate Caviare. I like mushrooms.

Chocolate truffles!

Come on.

Psilocybe tampanensis is a very rare psychedelic mushroom whose only known natural specimen was collected in the wild by Steven Pollock, near Tampa, Florida in 1977
What one-upmanship is this?

Caviar just tastes salty to me.

Mushrooms don't agree with me, so I've never tried truffle. If this wasn't the case, I'd have to try one for curiosity's sake. They don't look that nice though, and the fact that pigs and dogs are interested in them does not swing in their favour.

I'd like to try it, sounds like it could be an acquired taste.

Used to hate mushrooms but I love 'em now, wonder why I hated them before.

You were younger? Sense of taste changes as you age.

Look, truffles are much like saffron, overrated. Saffron is the most expensive whateveritis in the world and it's overrated, put a bit of yellow food colour into your rice and your guests will be impressed because it doesn't taste of much but they'll fall for the king's new clothes trick. Whatever you put into rice, the food that you serve with it will override any flavours.

I truly think that the human race can be so gullible.

That was kind of a rhetorical question, well, statement . When I first tried Guiness it tasted rubbish, but I love the stuff now . So if I didn't like truffles I don't think I'd dismiss them straight away, I'm in the habit of trying things again that I didn't like the first time in case my tastes have changed.

I like most foods and drinks but I'm still not keen on tomato juice, though the rest of my family seem to love the stuff. Tried it again yesterday but I'm still not keen on it.

Saffron is lovely - it makes a plain risotto taste proper.

I disagree it has a really intense flavour. You've probably kept your saffron too long before using it and it has lost all it's flavour.
