“Unfortunately due to Chicken Pox the Strictly Come Dancing doctor has stated that Tina O'Brien cannot participate this week. In accordance with our rules and contingency plans, Tina will be given a bye through to next week's show. If she is unable to dance next week she will have to leave the competition.

This Saturday all the other couples will dance as usual for the judges's scores and the public vote and one couple will be eliminated in the Sunday night Results Show.”

Given the amount of people on that show whose various lifestyle choices have led to them never encountering a child with the virus, I'd say there's a real possibility of the ranks being decimated. The show might even have to skip a week or two.

Not even when they were children themselves?

According to Wiki

Quote:
“A person with chickenpox is infectious from one to five days before the rash appears. The contagious period continues until all blisters have formed scabs, which may take 5 to 6 days at which point they are no longer contagious. It takes from 10 to 21 days after contact with an infected person for someone to develop chickenpox.”

In that case, for Strictly.

As soon as the spots break out that's the sign of the virus leaving the body, she would have been at her most contagious 2-3 weeks before the spots first appeared!

Let's hope all the others have already had it when they were younger (fingers crossed)

Hope she gets better soon, she will feel lousy I had it as an adult and its grotty grotty grotty.

Poor Tina It's horrible to get when you are an adult.

5-10 per cent of cases are adults catching it off kids, usually their own bringing it home from kindergarten/school.

Hope her little girl's had it already or she's going to be stuck looking after her too

If she's got chicken pox she is going to be very rough for a couple of weeks

That's very sad news - I thought she could do well on the show, so I hope she can get better and continue, but it looks only a slight possibility.

I wish her well.

OMG CAN YOU IMAGINE AN OUTBREAK

I hope everyone else has had it coz presumably she was at her most contagious just before the first show (when they were all around) and probably supporting one another.

I remember that Chicken Pox hit at the Australian Open tennis championships one year and about 10 of the players and media ended up having it. Its really not a thing you want to have in a crowded environment because you don't know you've got it when you are at your most contagious.

If its only just come to light today then Id say it was curtains for her coz there is no way she will be able to dance next week (or have long enough before next week's show to prepare something).

Yup, even though it's about 30 years since I had chickenpox, I remember I was spotty, itchy and felt generally awful for two weeks. I was certainly off school for that long. I doubt Tina will be back next week. As it's only the start of the series, perhaps they'll bring her back next year, if she has to withdraw due to illness.

The powers that be must be panicking in case any of the celebs or pro dancers haven't had chickenpox before! Chances are they'll catch it off her if they haven't.

Poor Tina, that is such a shame for her and Jared. I had chicken pox as an adult and it was awful....I really think that she will end up having to pull out of the competition as I don't think she will be back training in time for next week.

I really think that there might be a bit of an outbreak now and only hope that all the others have had them before.

I think you can also catch Shingles from CP can you not?....even if you've already had CP??? *not sure*

Why would they be panicking?

"Ratings gold, dahling".

Has anyone rewatched the shows yet to see who was hugging her/had physical contact?

I just thought, there's Tess, Bruce, Claudia and the judges too!

I'm really sad about that I was really starting to like them and was looking forward to their dance.

I remember I had really bad chicken pox when I was a kid, my sister had one spot and didn't even know she had it. Hope she gets better soon, will be a shame if she does pull out completely as I said was liking her and Jared.

Ratings gold but imagine if several pros and celebs end up dropping out? It could be a very short series! Mind you, if they have to draft in substitute pros, perhaps we might get Ian or Matt or Darren or Lilia back!

Would anyone who's thinking of writing "I hope Brucie has never had it yet" please DESIST!

Absolutely - masses of publicity, loads of articles, Outraged Of Finchley etc.

Sure, it's a bit of a headache for the production team, but that's something for lesser mortals to worry about - the executives wont care.

As to the impact on the fairness of the competition, or the hassle to the contestants? They won't give it a second thought. Those factors simply do not register in their minds.

And it's entirely possible that most of them had chickenpox as kids, probably catching it off other kids in school/kindergarten. It's primarily regarded as a childhood disease for a reason.

You make some good points there. I thought I was cynical but I've begun to realise I'm just an amateur compared to so many FMs here!
