On the contrary, I really hope he has had it and shingles too. It could be very serious for someone of his age even if he is in good health.

I don't understand this comment. CP virus is airborne. You can catch it off someone standing next to you in a shop.

Well, it all depends on your point of view, of course.

The executives would, no doubt, argue that they have a responsibility to bring the programme to as wide an audience as possible (i.e. focus on high ratings), both for "public remit" purposes and for commercial (sales) reasons.

They may also argue that it's especially important to ensure this "value for money" is achieved at this time of austerity.

So they view the show primarily in terms of ratings and positive publicity.

Personally, I think that they're wrong - but I'm both a dancer and a strong supporter of "quality against quantity", so probably not a typical member of the public that way.

I remember as a child the kids in my road all caught it at two week intervals. It went on and on.

That's her lot. It wouldn't be wise to allow her back the following week, as she'd still pose an infection risk to others.

I really think that there might be a bit of an outbreak now and only hope that all the others have had them before.

I think you can also catch Shingles from CP can you not?....even if you've already had CP??? *not sure*”

No, you can't catch Shingles. When someone has CP the virus remains dormant in nerve endings. At some time in the future - often because of stress or another illness - the virus can re-emerge as Shingles.

Because they are the same virus you can catch CP from someone with Shingles - but you would have to touch the fluid in the blisters. It is much easier to catch CP from someone with CP because the virus is airborne as well as in the blisters.

I just thought, there's Tess, Bruce, Claudia and the judges too!”

No hugging required.

CP is an airborne virus, it is highly contagious but hopefully most people will have had CP already.

Hopefully Jared - as an American - has had a CP jab.

Not if she has a serious dose of it. But she's tweeted saying she's gutted and is going to get well quick - personally when I've known people have it bad they wouldn't have been able to be bothered to lift their phone and not thinking about tweeting, just finding the nearest bed to curl up & die in!

Oh FondantFancy thank you so much- I have been saying this for years and no one believes me!

Everyone always believes the eternal maternal about catching CP from shingles....!

Anyway- poor Tina- she has twittered that she is absolutely covered in spots and itchy (my paraphrasing!) so I would think that her and Jared will be hard pushed to return next week.

poor jared too

You're very welcome FelineFantastic.

I've had Shingles on my face - mildly fortunately - it looked horrible.

No I didn't know that *crosses fingers that I don't get it even once!!*

I know shingles can be dangerous if its near your eyes.

I had so many CP spots that it was hard to see the skin colour underneath- my flippin sister gave it to me and she had 3 spots- where's the justice?!!

It's not impossible that she could be better by this time time next week, though if she is better in time it's likely that she'll be at a severe disadvantage training-wise. Admittedly I tend to get illnesses very lightly, but I got the whole thing over with in the space of a long weekend when I was 6 or 7. (I was bitter. Everyone else had a week or two off school, I got it over the long weekend we already had off. ) My mum on the other hand caught it off me and was far more ill with it than I had been and ended up developing shingles. Let's hope no one else goes down with it or the series could be in a real mess!

Wow, that's a relief (tho feel sorry for Tina). Can you imagine if everyone caught it?? (Except Widdie of course - she'd just fix the chickenpox with a steely glare and they'd run off squawking like .... headless chickenpoxes? )

I thought the reference to lifestyle choices was simply a reference to people chosing not to have kids of their own. (And if you do that, you won't have much unavoidable exposure to poxy children - so to speak!)

I don't think I got within 10 yards of a child between leaving school and my early 30s, when my friends started breeding. We did a bit of breeding of our own as well, and now I can barely go anywhere without tripping up over a child.

Both our kids got the pox when they were small. Elder one got two or thhree spots and was bsaically unaffected. Younger one looked like the after effects of a germ warfare experiment that went badly wrong. Poor thing.

I didn't have it as a child, but didn't catch it off the nippers, despite a lot of close contact.

Sorry FF, your reply looks a bit odd because I edited out the 'more than once' comment - I had second thoughts and thought it looked silly because if the virus is in the nerves then OF COURSE you can get it more than once.

I was very worried watching the ghastly Shingles developing towards my eye but luckily it stopped at my eyebrow!! I was lucky because I was forty something and that is considered young where Shingles is concerned. It can be really nasty for the elderly.

(I know that it is widely believed that you can only have CP once but actually people who have a very mild dose as a child can sometimes have it again later - your sister may not have had such a good deal!!)

My daughter-in-law had it when she was expecting her third child and was very ill for about two weeks. The doctors wanted her to go to hospital but she felt too ill to go! I feel for Tina and, indeed, for Jared if he hasn't had it.

By the way, I have had shingles, twice!

But like I said you can catch it off someone standing next to you in a shop. CP is contagious before the spots come out and whilst the spots are 'juicy'. Before the spots appear a person/child won't stay at home - and you'd be surprised at how many parents still take their poxy kids out - and even on planes which is a big no no.

Fondantfancy - Having two school age kids myself, nothing would surprise me about what parents do with ill children...

Good name, btw. I'm more a Cherry Bakewell man myself, but am pretty open-minded re cakes!!

Like others have said, I know of 2 young sisters who contracted it (at Christmas would you believe! )
The first one to succumb had a mild case of it while the 2nd one was one massive blistery spot, plus she was really ill with it while the other was neither up nor down!
Does it gain severity as it progresses round the family or is it just your luck?

All the best to Tina btw - get well soon! x

Thank you TLF, I think it's a blinking silly name but I do like cake.

I read a Parenting board and you wouldn't (well you would) believe the people who want to hide the CP spots so that they can go on holiday and infect others - possibly immuno suppressed people who could be very seriously ill as a result.

It makes me very cross.

Well this is one of the more entertaining threads of the day! And informative too!

Three Left Feet- I am a younger child too and had it that badly- is it some sort of revenge infection by elder siblings do you think?!

FondantFancy- I have to say that I wouldn't wish CP on any adult much as my sister has irritated me a lot over the years!! *checks to see if there is anyone who knows me in the thread*... Just an interesting fact to bear in mind tho!

(I have had German Measles about 4 times but no self respecting CP germ would dare come near me again!!)
