as in you couldn't really associate them with a particular genre of music

I can only think of Radiohead, Sufjan Stevens, Bjork, TV On The Radio, Yeasayer

I was going to mention Björk. She really is genreless.

I'm looking through my music list and the only ones I can see are the ones you've already mentioned (Björk, Radiohead, Yesayer - they all have their own styles, but not within specific genres).

Acts slip in and out of genres all the time but their main catalogues are usually within limits. It's say Take That are nothing more than pop, perhaps with a little bit of oldie soft rock in their more recent stuff.

Roisin Murphy maybe - usually has an electronic style but her first album Ruby Blue was more jazzy than electronic.

I'd say Bjork would easily fit in pop/electronica.

I'd say Bjork would easily fit in pop/electronica.
After her first two albums she's delved into all kinds of areas and none of her albums are alike. Her music is generally created electronically, but it's not always fitting with 'electronic' as being a genre. I mean, Medúlla is very different from Homogenic, for example. The only thing which links them is the singer.

For me anyway I would say Harry Nilsson. A singer/songwriter who, in my humble opinion, had a unique and original talent.

For anyone remotely interested there is a very good documentary about Nilsson finally being released on DVD later this month in the US. I have already ordered my copy! You can catch a little snippet of it here:

Some of Chase & Status' songs are hard to label with a genre. I was listening to their song Let You Go last night (which I bloody love) and funnily enough I was thinking how it doesn't really fit any genre. It's a bit dubsteppy in parts but the 'drop' sounds almost metal-like

I'd say Tom Waits is a pretty hard one to classify... Oh, and you wouldn't be able to pin just one genre onto Janelle Monáe. R'nb, hip-hop, funk, soul, dream-pop, blues and psychedelic space-rock... the girl's a master of it all!

I'd agree on Tom Waits - apparently he's been nominated for or won grammys in about 3 or 4 different categories (Alternative, Rock, Folk, Americana etc), so it seems quite a few people have trouble pigeon-holing him. He's kinda a genre to himself really.

beck and to a certain extent Nirvana, grunge was more a scene than a musical style.

I'd agree with this. Their albums have ranged from electro-pop to dance to folk and taken in all sorts of other genres on the way.
