EPG Abbreviations

Perhaps Bob_Cat could confirm the situation with these at the moment. We have channels that are being abbreviated in the EPG view, but if you press green and go to List they are their in full. So why are they abbreviated in the EPG section? It looks stupid. Both views have the same space to fit the channel name in so why in full in List but abbreviated in the EPG?

Channel 4+1 is abbreviated to 'C 4 + 1'
Men & Movies is abbreviated to 'M&Movies'
Movies4Men 2 is abbreviated to 'M4M2'
Inspiration TV is abbreviated to 'INI'
Chart Show TV is abbreviated to ChrtShw

These names can easily be put in full, (and in most cases are in the List view), so why not in the EPG view too where presumably, more people will see them?!

Because a service name could be quite long it is recommended the the Freesat specification that the short name descriptor is used in the EPG. Not having access to the code for our EPG I don't know if it has sufficient characters to fit the maximum possible length of a service name but I bow to the wisdom of our UX team in following the recommendation to use the short name descriptor.

Thanks for answering Bob. I see your point, but as it can be seen, the majority of the channel names that are being abbreviated have no need to be abbreviated, they will fit in! Flicking between Table and List view in the guide proves this. It seems unnecessary that the names have to be abbreviated at all in the Table apart from really long names like "True Entertainment".

The examples above, and more besides, will all fit in, in full, and are present in full in the List section of the EPG, but not in the main Table.

Is it just me the point of all this escapes me

If the epg says C4 + 1 or Channel 4 + 1. so what, there is no room for confusion.

Smacks of an obsessive compulsion rather than a serious thread.

Let's put it this way in thousands and thousands of freesat postings this is the only one making this observation and it's going nowhere.

What an obnoxious thing to say Graham.

I agree with the poster and find the abbreviations on the EPG annoying.

If you don't want to participate in the discussion then don't but its a quirk of the Freesat EPG that two posters now find annoying - so purely valid to discuss on the Freesat Forum and indeed seek clarification.

Just because you don't agree doesn't mean its a taboo subject.

Sorry to say I'm with Graham on this one, so it says CH 4 +1 whats the big deal, just be thankful the DOG doesn't say Channel 4 +1 that would do me in. I would think the field size been limited to eight charaters.

I agree with Master Control and Paddy. The Freesat EPG is messy with it's short abbreviations compared to SKY for example.

You don't have to apologise Dan because you agree with Graham - everyone is entitled to an opinion which is what MC was saying. Some posters become a little animated and verge on coming across as rude if they don't agree

DAB also has long and short service names.
I once had to set-up the "Smash Hits" service with a short label "SHits" True!

I agree that "C4 + 1" doesn't need spelling out, but "INI" is not obviously Inspiration TV.
My view is, if the full name will fit, show it!
