We have council garages at the back of our house and in one of them is a Dog locked in (just heard him bark again).

The owner comes and gets him, takes him for walk then locks him in and goes again.

If noone else round here will report this (trust me, i've mentioned it more than once, they just sit back and do nothing)... then i will!

Might be worth giving the RSPCA a ring. I saw one of those animal programmes recently where a dog was reported to be kept in a cupboard near the bottom of a stairwell outside a block of flats. Turned out the dog had been stolen. Thankfully it was microchipped and returned to its owner. If you report it, at least you will have done something.

I wouldn't hesitate to report something like that. Do it as soon as possible.

I would be concerned for the dogs welfare, left locked up for that amount of time and I would imagine without being properly prepared for the dog a garage would get very cold at this time of year onwrds and very warm in the summer. So yes I think you are right to be worried. Sadly many people have different ideas on how dogs can and should be treated but to me if you take the effort to get one, you should have the space in your life to be able to care/love it in every way.

As long as the dog looks well, has water and the conditions are fairly clean the RSPCA can't do anything about it.

But it will be in the dark. I wonder why the owner is keeping dog in there. I would report it. If it is a council garage he might be breaking the terms of lease

Why should they do anything when you aren't doing anything yourself?

Report it to police and RSPCA. Then see if they do anything.

That is TERRIBLE to shut a dog in a garage all day!! How dull and boring must that be for the dog and does he have a comfy bed to lie on or the concrete floor?

As a dog owner, I would report it to the RSPCA and the police, and/or even a local animal rescue centre and if there was no response, I would keep on reporting it until something is done! I couldn't bear to sit back and do nothing as it doesn't sound right! I just hope the dog has water in there and a cosy bed to lie on! Winter's coming and it will be COLD in there too!

Please don't wait any longer Op. This poor creature could need help. If anything, by calling the Rspca, it will give you peace of mind too. Nobody needs to know it was you whom reported it. It's getting bitterly cold at nights now and it's awful to think of this poor dog locked up like a criminal. Take a stand and help it.

I do hope you will do something, OP. This is no way to treat any animal. I'd call the police or the RSPCA ASAP.

The responses in this pet forum give me faith in humanity, despite the fact that we are responding to a horrible scenario. Anyway I agree with all the above, call the necessary authorities, just do something, please. Let us know how you get on.

Still no action taken by anyone?

Why have a pet and hide it away? Thats heart breaking, poor dog.

I'd have to say something, but what if the RSPCA can't find it a home? would they put it down?

Well all that's worrying the Op at present was Argos doing cheap Wii's yesterday according to his post history. I hope they did something about this poor mite locked away....

Yes Ive seen this before, people put what seems like a dreadful urgent situation on here and then they don't follow up and then you see some trivial stuff posted by them on another thread and you wonder if they are just winding people up or got nothing better to do. Pathetic.

I think the only reason people would do this is if it breaks the terms of their lease to keep the animal in the flat (and I can only think that they would contemplate this is if it is a temporary situation). Not wanting to give it up, they keep it in the garage thinking no one will know but obviously the dog will bark or they will be seen twoing-and frowing to the garage with the dog.

At the end of the day, the one thing that suffers is the dog. I just hope that calling out the RSPCA does not result in the death of the dog.

Hang on a minute. The dog has not been abandoned as someone is coming to walk it. You say it's "the owner" ... is it or are you just guessing?

I'm speaking as someone who has had dogs all their life and one of mine is sitting here beneath the radiator in a sheepskin lined basket grinning at me! Now, I wouldn't keep my dog outside but I know plenty of people who do and I know several dogs who actually prefer it! A friend of mine who lives on a farm has a young dog and it will only settle down lying outside the back door whatever the weather.

It honestly doesn't sound to me like the dog is being neglected because someone is checking on it but I suppose the best thing to do would be to contact the council and if its one of their garages, then maybe they'll do something.

I think you'll find if it's being walked, fed and watered the RSPCA won't do anything.

Wouldn't the easiest thing be just to ask the guy if there's a problem? Maybe the dog has fleas, maybe they have a relative staying with an allergy to dogs, maybe he's in the process of moving and can't take the dog just yet, maybe he's looking after it for someone, maybe he's found it and is awaiting the dog warden.

Sometimes there are logical explanations, it's not always about terrible, cruel pet-owners.
