They could replace it with the Bolero lol.

I think it will be interesting to see Anton and AW do it: if it ever gets that far.

Hmm. I didn't like that. I can see how people might like it, but I did not like it at all. I could barely stand to watch it through to the cliché ending.

Sorry fatskia, I am aware I am a lone voice when it comes to Pamela's Rhumba.

Not any more.

There have been some SCD rumbas I thought were good (Rachel and Vincent's, for instance), but not many.

The Rumba (with no H!!) is the most beautiful of all the ballroom and Latin danced, imo. I can't believe anyone would suggest getting rid of it! It's one of the five Latin dances found in all competitive Dancesport!!! If you find it boring you clearly don't understand the concept of it or have a sound appreciation of dance. Aaaaah. *gets off soapbox*

How many beautiful rumbas have we seen on SCD though? There is every chance that most of the celebs dancing it don't understand the concept of it or have a sound appreciation of the dance.

Personally, I wouldn't want to ditch it. But I wouldn't be nearly so patronising and nasty to those who did want to either.

I don't want it to be ditched from the show as I appreciate some people like that kind of thing but I don't enjoy watching it at all. I am sure if it is done properly by certain pros then it is ok but the celebs just make me cringe.

It is the dance equivalent of scraping your nails on a blackboard. Along with the equally awful Lindy Hop

I'd prefer the Hokey Cokey or even the Macarena!

Hope the link works. ”

Thanks for this one Wysiwyg, I really like it. There are no fancy tricks or raunchiness - it is all about smooth and slinky(?) arm. leg and body movements creating the mood - that would be the challenge for the celebs.

It is my fave dance to watch and also dance so I wouldn't want to see it ditched. I have always loved the rumbas that James has done with his celeb partners and Ola's rumba with Hollins was excellent.

Out of interest, why is it sometimes spelt with a 'h' - is that an american spelling?

That's given me an idea: bring back the dance off, the two contestants may nominate either of those dances you mentioned, and if they differ, Tess tosses a coin (don't let Claudia do it, she'll lose the coin under a chair).
Then they dance off simultaneously, without their pro, and the judges choose based on timing, effort, and artistic impression.

I'd definitely watch the Sunday night show for that

"artistic impression" on the Hokey Cokey & Macarena???

The rumba is beautiful if done well, but there have only been a handful of ones done well by the celebs. It's also an unlucky dance to be doing if others are doing an exciting dance like the quick step, as the viewers are likely to think it is much less entertaining/impressive. Not everyone can be good at every dance, so it's quite possible to lose a dancer with promise on a night when they do a rumba badly. Pamela seems to be the dancer who can do everything so far - I wonder if there will be any dance that is beyond her!

I like having the rumba in SCD. It pushes many participants out of their comfort zone and challenges even the best dancers.

Many of those that have made it to the final have been the ones that were able to crack the rumba...

It pushes me out of my comfort zone just watching it

I can't bear the rhumba so early in the competition - it makes me squirm. I think it's too hard on the men and makes them look ridiculous. Why not wait until the quarter finals and then we can see some of the good dancers performing it. Natasha and Brendan always springs to mind as a really great dance in season 1.

I too love the rhumba! Some of the celebs find it uncomfortable but not all and look at some of the results.

Certainly not a lone voice, but a quite restrained one compared to some.

We all like different things and even see things differently, which is a good thing, as there would be a lot less variety in the world if we all saw things the same way.

It's a horrid dance, but on the other hand it's given us some of the funniest, most cringeworthy, memorable moments in SCD history. In no other dance can the contestants make themselves look quite so ridiculous as in this one, so my vote would be to keep it.

Inappropriate music (mentioned elsewhere today) is partly responsible for poor rumbas, the beat is difficult enough to discern anyway.

What confuses me is, I've had rumba lessons and at absolutely no point was I instructed to grind my crotch into my partner's, lift my foot up to his shoulder or writhe my way up and down his body.

We left all that til afterwards of course.

Have I been taught a "different" rumba?

Was that a rumba Tina was doing on ITT?

Liked it way better than any I saw on Saturday, including Pamela's.

Indeed... seemed like one of the few where I wouldn't have watched between my fingers. God help us if Ann & Anton get that far

Most of the time I view the rumba behind a safety cushion and the majority of celebs look like they would rather have their teeth pulled. There have been rare occasions when they have managed to pull off a beautiful dance - Rachel and Vincent's rumba gave me goose-bumps. Unfortunately the dross far out weighs any good performances. Let the pro-dancers use it for the show dances, not sure what would replace it though.

Something can be both beautiful and boring. I dance and I DESPISE the rumba! I am full of enthusiasm, grace, poise and bounce (when appropriate) during all of the other dances but I want to throw myself out of a window when I hear the dreary rumba music come on for that dreary shuffling of feet and waving about of arms.
