I'm glad Ian's back too, though I wouldn't have wanted it to be like this. Condolences to Brendan, and good luck to Ian and Michelle.

Oh that is terrible news for poor Brendan!!

It will be interesting to see Michelle have another dance partner, i think it's the first time this has happend in Strictly history.

I thought Brendan was little short of heroic standing in front of camera to hear whether his partner or Paul had been eliminated. Despite my own experience of my father's death, I can still only vaguely imagine what was going through his mind.

I thinks this also explains why Michelle was even more negative looking than the previous week - her supporter, her crutch, had been swept away into another place - and why the judges let them off so lightly.

Not sure if this has been said yet on DS. But a dancing colleague says she has heard that Ian will dance with Michelle for the rest of the series whatever happens with Brendan and that he probably won't be back in the UK this side of Christmas?

Anyone else hear that?

I would have thought that wouldn't happen unless Brendan chose not to return. He is the one contracted to compete, not Ian, and from Michelle's twitter she clearly expects to be dancing with him once he returns if she's still in the competition.

It wouldn't be at all fair on Brendan if he was sidelined for the entire series, unless he chooses to stay in NZ or take some time out.

I haven't heard that but I'm sure Strictly will give Brendan as much time as he needs under the circumstances and that Ian will be happy to stand in for Brendan for as long as necessary.

That's what I'm thinking. It may not be just a matter of going for the funeral and then coming back again. He may be needed in NZ to sort out his father's affairs.

According to the Daily Mail, he didn't tell anyone about what had happened...

The Daily Mail quoted a BBC Spokesperson who said: "Michelle Williams will continue on Strictly Come Dancing and will be partnered with Ian Waite for this weeks show until Brendan returns the following week."

Presumably, Ian will stay with Michelle until/if Brendan decides to return.

If that's true, all Michelle saw that Saturday was a different Brendan, and not in a good way for her self-esteem. As I said, no wonder she was tense.

I thought that Michelle, the producers, the judges and I think Bruce and Tess knew but no one else did?

Michelle knew, as did the producers and probably the judges too, going by how gentle they were. Michelle was no doubt upset for Brendan, which is probably why they were both very subdued. He just didn't tell the other contestants

It's been known for a while that Brendan was on his way back for the funeral. It doesn't say he's quit the series in that article - just that he's going to miss next week's show. Ian Waite is standing in for him.
