It's not a singing competition though, it's a popularity contest, pure and simple.

Its not a singing contest. Its about impact . You can do that singing words movingly or strikingly or you can do it like Madonna, Cheryl or Diana by doing a visual display and creating a sound. Its also about likeability and for the males its about sex appeal on top.Cliff Richard can sing but he wouldn't get past the first audition today. Its always been the same - she loves you yeah yeah infinitum doesn't have meaningful lyrics, many modern songs sacrifice sound for meaning and even some of the best singers in the UK can't make Queen intelligible in the musical of We Will Rock You singing against a rock band and amplifiers.
When the X factor had someone who could sing the words strikingly they turned Leona into a sound where you couldn't understand the words. Alex . who wasn't as striking, they turned into an image. Stacey who can sing and interpret, they have not taken up. Lucie who could sing and interpret they lost early and she's now in Les Mis. Meanwhile Eoghan and Jedward got votes for something else entirely. Even when you have singers like Madonna and Diana, who are perfectly capable of singing in all sorts of styles and interpreting, they can't sing perfectly while they are bouncing around, they are among the minority who can sing it at all live and the aim is not the words but the sound and the visual impact. |

It's a singing/entertainment show.

Pop Idol was more of a singing contest, although certainly not a pure one in any sense. X-Factor always has been, and always will be, a popularity contest - simple as that.
