Please God No.

As Frankie Boyle said "The only way I want to see Geri Halliwell draped in a Union Jack again is if she dies in battle".

I was a never a huge fan of the 'Spice Girls' but i have got to say i appreciated and recognised what they stood for and how much the achieved which literally was gloabal domination.
Therefore, i think it would be very fitting and a great platform for them to do a one off performance, and would be a great way for the Olympics 2012 in London to kick start in grand style.

If the girls don't end up doin' it then i think another great choice would be 'Take That'.

I like the idea.

The only way I can see us creating an opening ceremony worthy of following china's is to play up to our strengths...which undoubtedly includes our contribution to music. A massive spectacular concert type show would go down well, bur only if they go down the road of true legends...NOT Leona bloody Lewis et all.

I'm kind of nervous at what they're going to come with tbh. Beijing's was incredible. Our intro bit was a tacky red bus. Lame.

No thank you.

Miniscule talents huyped by the media with the ridicolus 'Girl Power' slogan.

Bland, throwaway songs......

I don't bother with the opening or closing ceremonies but these people should be nowhere near them.

would love it if they did come back for a huge performance regardless of what people are critical of them for.

Their songs are timeless, their image flawless and their impact influential! NO ONE can compare to the Spice Girls really.

Thankfully, I don't think they stand a chance. The UK music scene's moved on and if a cheesy nineties pop group who struggled to sing live is the best we can do to showcase our country on the world stage, then we should never have bothered bidding.

Take That would be a far better choice as far as I'm concerned. They've shown they can stage impressive shows such as their Wembley Stadium Circus gig, they always sing well live and they're still hugely popular (if not even more so than the first time around).

Nobody outside of the UK gives a flying crap about Take That.

The obvious choice is Britain's biggest musical export - Iron Maiden. 100 million albums sold and constantly selling out tours all over the world. It'll never happen though, simply because of the ignorance surrounding heavy-metal

This country produces (or has produced) far better music than 'pop' music and has produced far better 'pop' music than this media created shambles.

None of which managed to captivate an audience quite like they did. They never claimed to be amazingly talented, its people like you that tend to bring that up. They were a young, vibrant and bouncy group of girls who succeeded against the odds. Let us not forget that they sacked their manager at the height of the fame only to continue through a year long tour which they had to manage themselves due to Simon Fuller taking all his staff with him.

Personally, I think it would be great if it was carried off properly. It could potentially be a bit of a dud.

If this was a UK based event, yes...however theyve only ever really been a UK band. Spice Girls were the only truely global act we've had in a very long time.

They 'succeeded' due to PR hype - it wasn't against any 'odds'.

The media adopted them as an easy and lazy way to feed crap to the masses (see 'Big Brother', 'The X Factor' etc) and fill their schedules/newspapers without much effort.

It's happened for a great many years in 'pop' music - just because they were female doesn't make them any different.

Why not? Because they're "too loud"?

Seriously, on a truly global scale, Iron Maiden are one of Britain's biggest musical exports who are still active. I would only put The Who and The Rolling Stones higher than them.

Their latest album went to No. 1 in 28 countries all over the world. You can't argue with the facts, and the fact is that Iron Maiden are one of the most popular British bands in the world.

Let's face it whoever get chosen, it can't be as bad as the Leona Lewis / Jimmy Page mash-up at the end of the last Olympics.

If it goes to Cheryl Cole, then the world may actually end

Iron Maiden? Aren't the Olympic opening ceremonies supposed to represent optimism and fun etc etc? Do any of their songs fit into what the show would be all about?

I have to say the Spice Girls would probably be the best bet as they are perhaps the last global phenomenon to come out of the UK.

Because they're not the type of band that the demographic that I think Opening Ceremonies are aimed at, like to listen to.
