Not that its any relevance to the industry and all but I am still quite curious...

even though she's already had a hit I think its gonna be Katy B.. her album should be out next year aswell

I'd been planning to start the same thread. I think the sound of 2011 is semi-important - it's very self-fulfilling (because the artists are chosen by the very same people as who are going to publicise them) and in the past it's been largely accurate.

My tips:

Indie: Warpaint, Zola Jesus, Flats, Chapel Club, Funeral Party, Neon Trees, Gold Panda
Pop/country: Ben Montague, Rumer, Sugarland
Rock: Deaf Havana, We Are The Ocean, Yashin, Black Veil Brides
Urban music: Yasmin, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, Marvell

I really doubt Sugarland are going to be in the BBC Sound of 2011.

a) They are REALLY country. Waay more than Lady Antebellum and Taylor Swift. If anyone was gonna' come across, it would be Carrie/Miranda etc

b) They already have 2 successful albums out

c) They are Grammy and other award winners...

I agree with Katy B and Sunday girl being strong possibilities, while I like Funeral Party, for some reason I can't see them getting a mention.

I can also see Florrie Possibly being in their somewhere.

I will eat my metaphorical hat if The Vaccines are not involved somewhere in the list but I can't see them topping the pole. I don't expect guitar music to feature strongly but Darwin Deez will possibly get a mention. I know he was a lot of industry types for this year but its only in the last few months that he seems to be getting much play, so a not bad outside bet (if he wasn't allready mentioned in their list last year that is, he certainly featuted in NME's version.)

I agree with Katy B, but I feel she's already got a single and a featured single out there, so winning wouldn't serve as any purpose to propell her recognition.

Darwin Deez is a no, they are another band too well known to get nominated.

I can see Chapel Club getting a nomination though, have heard a lot of hype about Sunday Girl too. I also agree that Yasmin from the Devlin song could get a nomination or perhaps even Emeli Sande from Chipmunk's "Diamonds Rings", I know she's planning a single for 2011.

their albums been out for a while and they've had quite a bit of press so i doubt they'd be on it

Clare Maguire! She is awesome and put on a brilliant show when she supported Hurts last month.

Gypsy & The Cat - From New Zealand, very Empire of The Sun meets Fleetwood Mac, Their debut album is fantastic.

Gold Panda from the world of indie, and I reckon Penguin Prison, Human Life and Skrillex from the world of Electronica/dubstep will get well deserved shouts too

No way are Gucci Mane & Waka Flocka gonna be on the list, they sound like a pair of grunting retards.

Best Coast, Vaccines, Heartbreaks, Egyptian Hip Hop, Skepta, Katy B.

Some of them may be too big though, not a massive fan of them all, but Vaccines and Warpaint have been gaining a lot of industry hype recently.

I also reckon Kids of 88, Living Days, The Naked & Famous, Japayork, Nikki & The Dove, NightWaves and The Knocks will be in with a chance. All Fantastic indie/electronic/new wave bands..

So far a lot of great people have came from the Critics choice Brit award and BBC sound of 2011.... So we should be in for a treat either way.

Jessie J fits the bill
as does Claire Mcguire
Jamie Woon or James Blake aswell
Outside bets Brother, Kurran & The Wolfnotes or Sleigh Bells

Gold Panda was in Sound Of 2010 list
and Katy B wouldn't be aloud having had a top ten single

Gees, people actually care about this poll? All it's ever been is an indie w*nkfest! It couldn't have a more narrow interpretation of music if it tried.

Eh?

That, I'm sorry is a pile of Sh**te.

Lets look at the winners....

2003 - 50 Cent (Rap, I hear he's a massive morrisey fan though )
2004 - Keane (indie -ish. More of a pop band though)
2005 - The Bravery (quite indie - very rubbish)
2006 - Corine Bailey Ray (Jazz Soul? Not indie anyway)
2007 - Mika (Couldn't be less indie if you tried)
2008 - Adele (Soul? Again, i'm not sure what genre she is but its not indie for certain)
2009 - Little Boots (Electro, nme like her but she's an electro pop act, not indie. Not even a little)
2010 - Ellie Goulding (pop basically, "credible" pop that the nme probably like but again not indie)

So to conclude, one act that could probably be called indie, one who at a stretch could be called indie and 6 that are not.

Indie Wankfest? In last years top 5 you had 2 pop acts (Marina and the Diamonds and Ellie Goulding), 1 Electro/pop act (hurts) and one indie leaning electro act (Delphic). Finally Drums at number 5 are the only traditonal indie type act in this years list.

As for narrow, well not really, winner wise you have Hiphop, Soul, Jazz, Electro, Pop, Indie. Now i'm not saying its the most diverse list ever but it is radio 1, they aren't ment to be that cutting edge. Thats 6 musics job. Its a reasonably diverse list, and there are some genres lacking. I would point to a lack of any metal rock or dance in terms of winners but ya know. I think you were pretty over the top in your "couldn't have a more narrow interpretation of music" commment, all things concidered.

Doubt she'll get it, but I'd love Zowie to be in it, she's a new pop singer from New Zealand, and her single Broken Machine is very Marina & The Diamonds. I can see Clare Maguire and Sunday Girl getting a mention also surely Jessie J? Katy B deffo won't, Katy On A Mission was top 5, Perfect Stranger was top 20 and she has another single called Lights On out in December which will probably do well too. I'd love Emeli Sande to be in it too, she's great on Diamond Rings and she also sings on a track called Let Go on Tinie Tempah's album. Also I love Yasmin on Runaway, hope she's big solo in 2011!
