Anyone else get a "recording failed, unknown reason" with Spooks tonight (18th)? Most annoying. Actually I had 3 recordings fail throughout the day today, but this is the only one I'm bothered about. Normally the box is v reliable, so 3 in one day is very disturbing. I had done the requested freesat tune prior to Spooks, but not the other failures so no idea what's going on....

I've just about given up on my Pace Twin Digital recorder to go Freesat, but now I'm not so sure. Surely reliable digital tv recording can't be that difficult?

I've had the HDR since launch and do get the recording failed now and again. Very rarely though (a handful of times since launch).

Spooks should be on iPlayer though

Spooks recorded OK here. I too get the odd failed recording, once every 6 months maybe, all on ITV HD.

Apparently it is. The most reliable boxes I've found are Sky+/Sky HD and the Humax Foxsat HDR. None of them are perfect. The HDR seems to suffer mainly from broadcasters not sending the right metadata. The Sky boxes suffer more from software faults with the box.

Neither box is likely to lose more than half a dozen recordings a year in my experience though.

I should point out that the HDR is the only Freesat box I've ever used. I do have experience of quite a few Freeview boxes though. The box I use the most is Sky HD. Lol - at present it's running both tuners from 8pm to 1am nearly every night. You can almost here it whining in protest

Recorded fine here on series recording. Timing was exactly to schedule 21:00 - 22:00

Region BBC1-WM which is not one that moved transponders. It would be interesting to know if the failed recording was one of the ones that moved.

That has been my experience, too. The HDR has been very stable since the last software update. The Sky HD Box has been more tempermental - typically requiring a power cycle reboot every 3-4 weeks.

My experience too, the HDR has been the best PVR I've had (I include an early Pace twin, Sky+ - both Pace and Thomson - and Sky+HD in that assessment. Oh, and a Wharfedale LP250HDMI - er, if you must know it was an impulse buy I regretted from the moment I booted it up). The HDR knocks spots off all of them. That's why I was so shocked when 3 recordings failed in one day! It's normally rock solid - and has been ever since. Now set to record Sunday night's repeat of Spooks.

My mothers likes to record "Midsummer Murders" on her one from ITV Meridian but more often than not "Failed Unknown Reason".

My poor mothers box still tends to fail to record Midsummer Murders from whichever ITV region she tries.

This is the ones on in the afternoon at about 16:00

e.g.

DRAMA: Midsomer Murders
On: ITV1 Meridian (103)
Date: Thursday 28th October 2010 (starting in 3 hours and 39 minutes)
Time: 16:00 to 17:00 (1 hour long)

A Talent for Life. Series 6, episode 1.
Conclusion. Barnaby and Troy have to solve a double murder when a feisty former socialite and a Casanova are found bludgeoned to death. However, the motives for the murders seem disparate, and there are several people who are suspected of involvement.
(Stereo, Repeat, Widescreen, Subtitles, 2003, 2 Star)

Director: Sarah Hellings
Starring: John Nettles, Daniel Casey, Jane Wymark, Laura Howard, Honor Blackman, Philip Franks

I was wondering could it be because ITV have spilit these into one hour epsisodes but have not changed the EPG data to match?

Anyone else recording this program?

I can't check meridian but ITV1 Granada is coded correctly for all Midsomer Murders within the epg. Most likely explanation is ITV reverting to messing with the event ID's which caused loads of recording failures during the World Cup. Set a series record to see what happens. It has picked up all the Midsomer Murders in the epg.

I did not realise till today the Freesat EPG did not list all the regional variations of ITV.
All we get is Meridian and London.

So I have set my mothers box to a manual 16:00 - 17:00 mon-fri and my unit with a series link both using Meridian.

I will report back after the event...

Your postcode sets the regional ITV channel at 103. Everyone gets London ITV at 977 (including London postcode users) because it's the only one that has audio description. It also give access to HD content on ITV1-HD via the red button for those using a postcode that does not give a channel at 119

Yes, I am & I'm getting failures once or twice a week. The schedule updates correctly but fails to record. It seems to me that when we are here to watch it, it records, but if we are out it fails. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean it's not out to get me!

Try a factory reset, you will have to redo the recording schedule

Yes, mine was the same. Been OK this week but I'll do a reset next week when I'll need to alter the schedule for BBC1 HD.

Both my Mothers manual recording and my Series Link one recorded OK.

However she seems to think it is always the first part of two part ones that fail so we will see this Friday.

Back to my thought that when they cut the episodes in half some data about program length was not updated.

Just a guess of course....

I think you could be right. I put in the series link for the new evening progs. & these have all been fine. There is also a full length one on Sun afternoons which has never failed. It's only the split episodes in the week which have a problem.

Midsomer Murders today failed to start despite still being in the schedule. Looks like the event ID problem, After 17:00 it should create a failed recording entry in the media list outside of the series folder and the schedule list will update to the next one (On Sunday I think). Watch this space
