Haven't got the link but i read it on Yahoo.

Nowadays most people live quite nicely and drive a nice car and have nice things and its reflected in the boring music we get on the radio.

It seems most people are just happy to tick along and not kick up to much of a fuss about anything and thats reflected in the safe music.

In the 70's and 80's you got strikes protests and riots all the time, and much of the music especially in the late 70's/early 80's reflected that with angry but passionate music.

In the yuppie late 80's you got yuppie Rick Astley type music etc...

I don't think we'll get any decent music in the charts for a long while yet.

He loves Gaga and the Scissor Sisters though, so obviously it's not all modern music he hates.

its odd that one of our greatest ever songwriters of utterly bland uninspiring muzak should make such a contradictory statement.

yes there were times of greater social upheaval in the past, but they were not reflected in elton johns music! he was always 'square' and never was a reflect on youth culture at the time.

Your Song
Candle in the Wind
Funeral For A Friend (love lies bleeding)
I'm Still Standing
Tint Dancer
Island Girl
Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Hardly bland or uninspiring material. Perhaps you are tone deaf?

No, that's a recent phenomenon.

Sadly you're totally wrong. There's always been plenty of rubbish around.

It would be interesting to know what he actually thought of bands like The Sex Pistols, The Clash, etc ... at the time!

I actually like a few Elton John songs (from the 70's) but he's nearly always talked total rot.

I agree ... they're nice songs (and I could add a few more) ... but I don't think they could be called inspiring.

Not from positions 1-40 as is now the case.

At worst in the past half the chart was full of dross.

Perhaps Elton should write some decent modern music himself then, instead of whinging about the state of music today. He's churned out nothing but insipid pap for the last 2 decades.

Add "Someone Saved My Life Tonight".

Better than any amount of 'pop' crap on its own.

And a lot more of his early stuff such as Border Song.

Reviews mean nothing. Elton's treated lke pop royalty due to his back catalogue, charity work, etc. so nobody in the media really says anything bad about him, but I bet this new album is just more of the same bland, out of touch rubbish.

The majors have been pumping out drivel to the lowest common denominator since at least the 80s, and there was plenty kitsch nonsense before that too a la 'grandad' and all sots of other novelty crapola. That's at least 30 years of pumping out crap, to say it's a modern phenomenon is simply untrue.

hardly cutting edge or 'cool' are they, nice twee mor material that challenged nothing, reprisented nothing, music for 'nice' people. i like any style of music that grabs me and speaks to me in some way.... elton john has never done that.

full agreement!

i accept the argument though that his 70's material was arguably good...but it wasnt my taste at all. i can think of several current chart tracks that id rate well above anything eltons done. i like to believe the charts are youth lead, as each generation has its own fashion (hence my liking of the variety our music has generated over the years), elton never has spoken for 'da kidz'.. i was a teenager in the early 70's when he arguably had his best material... to me and my friends he was a sideline act, loved by 'blue peter' (square - unfashionable) kids as opposed to the young glam fans or older rock/prog rock fans.

He obviously doesn't hate all reality show stars. He had Will Young guesting on his New Year's Eve show a couple of years ago. They sang "Daniel" as a duet. Brilliant!

Well he's right, isn't he?

And he can talk, regardless of his dubious way of handling stuff, his style and the fact his his best days are behind him, the man is absolute monster songwriter. He's brilliant. Hardly anyone can write like him anymore.
I was listening to Tonight sang by George Michael the other day, and after all this years i'm still amazed at the brilliance of those lyrics.
And for the record i'm a teen of early 90s, the Nirvana age, it's not that Elton was particularly relevant to anyone I know and i probably at the time would despise his music with all my might, but we have to be fair here.

No, he's just old and out of touch. There's still loads of good music being produced today.

Who would want to? His music says nothing. Give me someone like Elbow or Doves over him any day.

is he?.... its the same old mantra ive heard recycled for 40 years. "music today isnt as good as it used to be" .... yeah, right, theres always been 'good' and 'bad' music in the charts (which usually relies on ones personal taste) .

I think he has point personally. Subject to opinion of course, but previous decades music, particularly chart music have been a whole lot better.

Well have you seen the charts lately? Of course there has been good and bad music, the problem is, all music in the charts now, it's not just bad is absolutely terrible.
I think there is a big difference between music we dislike for whatever reason, and bad music, the charts have nothing but bad quality music at the mom. There is not one good song in the Top 40.
