Phone recommendations needed

I’ve currently got an iPhone 3G and am due a new phone soon so I am after a recommendation or two. I won’t be going for an iPhone 4. Too expensive.

My requirements are:
Android 2.1 or (pref) above
At least 3.5 inch capacitive screen.
Good music player – very important – which can be toggled from headphones or headphone attachment.
FM Radio (not internet radio….FM radio).
Camera has to be ok, but it’s not a major consideration….just better than the 3G!

What fits that bill? I was looking at the Desire, but didn’t think much of the music player when I had a play, and have seen other reviews suggesting it’s not too hot.

What’s out there that fits the bill?

Regarding the Desire there are numerous music players available on the Android market which are better than the stock one - MixZing for example.

I have a Desire and love it. I confess I've never listened to music on it though (I have an MP3 player for that). It meets all of your other requirements though.

Hmmm, hadn't thought of that. Good one. I want all my stuff in one place - can't be bothered to carry an mp3 player, FM radio and phone about you see!

Has anyone got any experience of the Xperia X10? Seen mixed reviews.

I have had a X10 since march - Not the best phone I've ever owned.

There are a lot of problems with it that SE could/should have sorted by now and with the release of 2.1 update they have has yet to sort.
- call/speaker volume quite poor!
- battery life (lasts less than a day STANDBY)?
- laggy interface? I’ve missed several calls due to lagging slide bars and interface.
- Exchange sync for emials etc?
- camera flash that isn’t a flashlight?
- browser with flash support?
- streamlined contact dialing?

My wife has a Galaxy S and TBH it kicks the pants off the X10, and had I not signed up to an 18mth contract I'd have sacked the X10 and gone for the galaxy.

Well, if you install a new media player it runs on the Desire so all your music is still in one place, along with your FM radio. The built-in player is functional but basic, whereas the likes of MixZing (to name but one) give more features.

I was torn between an X10 and the Desire at first but when I saw the X10 I was put off by how plasticky it seemed, plus it runs a VERY old version of Android (1.6 - soon to update to 2.1, whereas most other Android phones are now on 2.2).

I've had a HTC Wildfire for a month.

While it may not be as great as the Desire, for the price (free on a £15/month contract) it is excellent value for money. I just couldn't justify the extra upfront costs or monthly contract for the Desire.

I haven't tried the FM radio but the media player is adequate (though as others have said, many others are available). The only downsides are that the handsfree speaker is very feeble and the battery life is disappointing. The screen maybe worse than the Desire's but I haven't found that a problem - but then again I don't use it for playing much video.

What about Windows Phone 7? I think Zune as a music platform is great.

Why change?

I think the Wildfire is retrograde in many aspects.

A very balanced review of the SanFran if you can accept its fiddly camera and not good video recording.
