high pitched noise from my philips 36pw W/S TV
has anyone got a remedy for this? the noise comes and goes and doesn't seem to happen when anything particular happens.
it's like a high pitched noise and an occasional 'squeal' , changing the channel seems to resolve it but it comes back after a while. i can go days/weeks without it happening and then it'll come back? does anyone have any advice? |

Usually means that either the coils or tension plates need servicing. My Toshiba 17inch portable in the bedroom is the same. TV servicing companies will be able to fix it.

I had a TV that started doing that after I had re-located it.
pmcmillan has suggested the cause and I feel the move had disturbed something. So I picked it up and then put it back down again and 'hey-presto' the high pitch 'whine' disappeared. Not to return for some months. May be worth a try before 'spending-out'. Watch your back though!! StereRowe |

I've noticed this on our Philips 24" (only just a year old), It'll squeal for a few minutes then go silent. It's very on-and-off and only happens every now and again.

I have a 5 month old Philips 32pw6515 and it seems to do it just after switch on from cold. Only last for upto 10 mins.
It also only seems to do this high pitch noise when a bright picture is displayed. Any ideas....???? Tapping the back case stops it too!!!!! Will try re-positioning the tv to see if that helps. Though this is the 2nd tv that has gone like this |

Unfortunately, a high-pitched noise is common to (almost) all 100 Hz TVs. It intensifies when there are bright colours on screen (especially when the colour white appears).
Only solution is to get rid of the crap 100 Hz TV and buy a decent 50 Hz one (without the digital crap), but you have to hurry, they have stopped manufacturing them (in favour of those d*** flat panels) and they are dissapearing from the shops quick! |

Cheers mate! My tv is a 50hz, however it has contrast plus / crystal clear 3 etc..... maybe that has something to do with it? I can get a refund (£430 from costco) but as you said, there are not many crt's about any more ![]() OOPS my model is a 32pw6518

If it has Pixel Plus, then I'm afraid it's 100 Hz, Pixel Plus is a digital engine used only in 100 Hz TVs (as far as I know) and perhaps also some flat panels.
A 50 Hz (conventional) TV, doesn't need any of the digital Pixel Plus, Wega Engine, Hi-Pix etc crap, it just passes the picture through clean and unadulterated. Last edited by Hitchcock : 27-11-2005 at 15:24. |

Hmm looked on the freq. asked question on the philips troubleshooting site:
Problem Category Frequently Asked Questions Problem Sound - Disturbing sound (such as buzzing, clicking, cracking, humming, whistling, etc). Cause Disturbing sound on all channels. Solution It is normal to hear a disturbing sound (such as buzzing, clicking, cracking, humming, whistling, etc) from a distance less than 2 meters (6 feet) with the television sound muted. |

Most of that's just baloney, if you ask me. There are no mechanically moving parts in a 'normal' television. You have always been able to hear or feel a VERY slight high-pitched noise from a conventional (50 Hz) TV. The problem with 100 Hz is that this noise really starts to buzz and annoy! Sellers (let alone the manufacturers) usually forget to mention this when selling you a TV! (I too had to return, regretfully, a very rare decent 100 Hz TV, just because of the buzzing noise it was creating, it was just too much. )

My Sony 28" Widscreen which I bought at the end of June from Comet has developed this fault. It started happening suddenly one night in October. It's a high pitched noise, with buzzing and occasionally starts squealing loudly. Also, different images and objects on-screen can start making the tube sound very loud. If I change the channel over on my Freeview box, when the screen goes black, the TV can become quite loud. It's spoilt what was a good TV. ![]() However, some days I'll switch the TV on, and it'll be fine. It's really annoying because if I phone Comet about the problem and they send an engineer round, if the TV works fine at the time they come round, they won't believe me. ![]() Is this a common problem? |

This can also be caused by a problem with the HT cap. Any reasonable TV engineer will be able to tell you what the score is - we could sometimes cure problems like this be simply cleaning the end of the HT lead with brasso. Another possible is a faulty flyback transformer, again needs investigating properly.
In response to the 'noisy' 100Hz problems, I've had two 100Hz (both Sony) and never had excessive noise from either, so I'm really surprised to hear that there seems to be some people who are having problems. |

How strange, i was going to post this question. My Mitsubishi 21" CRT has been doing this for a few months now. It's about 10 years old and thought it had had it. It can be so annoying sometimes. It's a 50Hz, though.
Also, for the first 10 minutes or so when i switch it on, the picture keeps expanding at the same time as making the noise. Does that mean anything? |

Do most brand new TVs have this high pitched noise? Mine is starting to do my head in now, but it's pointless getting a new TV if that's gonna do the same.

The trouble with noises like these are that one person will hear them and another one won't - usually age dependant as your ears become less able to hear high pitched sounds as you get older. Also, many electrical items emit high pitched noises - these can come from transformers, coils, condensers etc, so it would be unreasonable to expect a TV to be completely silent. Why not wander into a small independent electrical retailer (the like of Comet would be too big and noisy) and have a listen at the back of some of the TV's on display - might help you discover if yours is noisy or not. |

LOL, i'd probably get some funny looks in Comet with my ear glued to the back of the TVs, but i guess it's the only way to find out.

If it helps, from your description, it does sound like your TV has a fault. Exactly which components want replaced is something that can't really be decided until its seen by en engineer in a workshop.
