The Charts
I'm fairly new to this forum and gong through some of the threads there sems to be quite a focus here on what's in the charts, which artist is "floping", campaigns to get certain tracks to number one, etc. and it's got me me wondering why people even care about the charts these days. Music that makes the charts is such a small subset of all the music that's out there yet a lot of discussions tend to come back to the charts, particularly those where someone proposes that music is rubbish these days and uses the charts as evidence. So, do peple really care about what's in the charts today, and if so, why?

There is a lot of focus on chart music by many posters on this forum, but not by everyone. Personally I pay little attention to the charts myself, but then again it could be that the stuff I do listen to bears little relation to what you might be interested in anyway - as you say, there's such a big range of music out there.
All I can say is, if there's other stuff you want to talk about, try it and see what response you get - you might be surprised. |

There's plenty of DS:musicers who arent really into chart music, but as our tastes are pretty diverse compared to 'the mainstream' any particular threads relating to particular artists/genres tend to sink a bit quicker than the others. It's the nature of the beast.
DS:music is home to a huge selection of very learned and very well attuned music fans. |

That's just how popular culture is unfortunately and it is the DS target audience. I personally just skim over this forum now and again, if I wanted to really talk or read about music I switch over to sites like sputnikmusic.
Also I agree there are members and posters on this forum who know a thing or two about good albums/bands etc. but they're a rare breed ![]() My answer to your question is it's just because it's everywhere, people want what they feel is the popular thing at the moment and with media everywhere it's hard to ignore. It's like growing up with parents who are religious; it's hard to get out of the fixed ideologies. |

Cheers everyone for your responses. Yes, I've seen in some discussions already that there's definitely people here that know their stuff and have varied tastes in music, which is great. I was just curious about the chart thing really. It just seemed odd that it becomes a focus so often.
