iPod Touch viable for internet radio?
Sir Otto
20-10-2010
Is an iPod Touch 4G plus a speaker dock a viable alternative to a dedicated Internet radio e.g a Roberts Stream? The Touch appeals for mobile internet access but as I've also been considering buying an internet radio I'm wondering whether I can get both functions in one mobile device without sacrificing too much in useability.

Thanks for any thoughts.

I use mine plugged into to my hifi with an internet radio app running with absolutely no problems.

I do exactly the same as above with no problems.

I use the snowtape app for internet radio as it records each song and automatically trims it, cover arts it, names it, etc for listening to in the future.

Thanks - it sounds the way to go then, and I like the sound of Snowtape. This stuff is all new to me! Would I be right in thinking the iPod Touch is basically an iPhone without the phone bits, and a more limited camera?

More or less yes. Cheaper too!

Its how I use mine - there are some good listen again/podcast apps as well.

If you like Dance/House etc, Kiss Kube, Ministry of Sound, Defected, Graeme Park

Well my shiny new iPod has arrived and while it looks a seriously cool device I've already run into a problem - apparently you can't listen live to BBC radio because it doesn't support the type of streaming the iPlayer uses. Is there a work around for this?

download Wunder Radio, However there is an App called BBC Radio that isn't part of the bbc but it works quite well.

Thanks, I've checked out the Wunder Radio and Tunein Radio web sites, both of which offer BBC stations as well as thousands of others. I'm still learning to drive the iPod but it seems like it's not a problem after all

Just as a footnote, I discovered that live BBC radio streams are only available at 48kHz which is a bit of a downer. I believe the high bitrate streams are incompatible with the iTouch hardware. That said the iTouch with Tune-in Radio app works very well and is easy to use. At first I couldn't connect to Radio 3 but a quick email to Tunein Radio tech support produced a solution within a couple of hours - excellent customer support.

Sounds bogus to me. The iPod Touch should be able to handle any bit rate dependent on the speed of connection. BBC probably do it for a number of reasons. To save bandwidth costs, to discourage people recording and/or so people can listen to it on mobile even when they don't have 3G to stop it from constantly buffering.

TuneIn Radio is good. Not sure whether they have updated yet for iOS 4 to do proper multitasking yet though.

This is what the BBC iPlayer FAQ says:

"It's not currently possible to listen live to BBC radio on an iPhone because the device doesn't support live streaming using the standard web technologies that the BBC uses and doesn't have an FM radio tuner. However, iPhone users can use the BBC iPlayer catch-up service or download podcasts."

Presumably the lower bit rate service is provided for users on limited bandwidth, and it does work on the iTouch/iPhone. This is all a bit technical for me!

They may well mean 'Flash' in that it is a standard DRM technology.
