Common issue with smartphones in general. Depends what you do with them - obviously a smartphone is essentially a small computer, so they have a higher drain than "normal" phones. The Desire has something of a reputation for its poor battery life. It does, however, improve over time it seems, as the battery becomes "conditioned", and you really need to have done that initial 3-hour charge before you powered it on for the first time. Personally mine lasts about two days between charges, but if I'm using it a lot I stick it on charge each night when I go to bed.

my main issue is the 3g data, it doesnt seem to sync my 2 gmail inboxes. its a pain as i need access to this!!
No problem with this on mine.

Me too.

Not here. Could be poor coverage in your area. Mine flies along.

Take it back - the plug is obviously faulty.

The battery is not brilliant, but a search on here would have told you that before you bought it.
It is possible to get a spare higher capacity battery or just a normal spare. If you are constantly syncing, then you will go through the battery in less than a day.
You can discharge almost fully then recharge a few times and after that, not let it go below 30% to maximise life. Try also xda developers forum for tips on maximising life eg.
Not sure why you can't sync your gmail. I don't have an issue, perhaps it is more orange network related to your location.

I live and work in Manchester and my Desire works perfectly. Could be the area of Manchester you're in though. Where I live and where I work are fine, as is Leeds (work there quite a bit). As for the charger phone CPW and tell them the problem - they'll tell you what to do. If they'd like Orange the shops are all franchises and nothing to do with the company itself.

Xtremelabs speedtest will record your upstream and downstream stats. Probably worth installing that to give you some firm stats if you are not happy with performance.
