Had a text message from O2 yesterday...You've recently been enjoying free picture messaging (MMS) with the new iphone software. From 25th October 2010, an MMS will be charged at 20p as part of your normal tariff. More info at www.o2.co.uk/iphonemms

Anyone else had this as no one I know on O2 with an iphone have had it.
I called o2 as I should be on an unlimited texts. They tell me that picture messages are no longer included and each one will cost me 12p
The link in the email tells me it's 25p.
Anyone got a clue which, if any is right?

Cheers

Think they're rolling it out to everyone as and when you upgrade or change tariff. Just had it happen to me recently. O2 are getting tighter and tighter.

I lost free MMS when I changed service to get unlimited data a few months ago (creeping under the new limit wire). If I want to send a photo I can do it via email instead.

I am on a small business tariff with o2 and had a letter today to say that from October 25th we will be charged 21p per mms. We have a text message allowance in our tariff and I assumed that mms would still be included in this unless we go over our allowance and if we do go over, then we would be charged 21p but now I am concerned that they are not included and we will in fact be charged for every picture message we send!

Does anybody have any more info on this? I think a call to o2 might be in order to clarify....

Got this text this morning. I'm in mid contract - I'm not raging at losing MMS but I am shocked they can just change the contract when they feel like it.

I can't wait until June when my contract is up and I can o2 once and for all. iPhone 5 on the 3 Network for me as O2 are a shadow of their former selves

Anyone sending a lot of MMS could argue that the change is detrimental to them and use it as a way or terminating their contract. Probably.

On iPhone tariffs with unlimited texts, MMS were never included. They are 20p.

MMS is not part of unlimited texts and never was.

They are not changing contracts. They are just ending the special offer on iPhone iOS4 were MMS was totally free (ie was not charged for and did not come out of bundle.)

I'm on the iPhone 30 contract with a £7.50 unlimited text bolt on.

The MMS took 4 texts out of my 75 monthly mms allowance (ie not out of my unlimited bundle) in other words the 75 texts I get a month will not get used at all. Only my unlimited text allowance will be used. O2 getting stinjy, first with their data (no more unlimited), then their texts (scrapping the unlimited texts bolt on), now their MMS (no more MMS taking 4 texts from allowance) - not long before everyone jumps ship.

not long before everyone jumps ship.
I have a sim free 30 day O2 i phone tariff and am not aware of any network who can beat it. If I did not get the £5 per month discount off the excellent O2 BB it possibly might be worth trying Tesco or Gifgaff .

I live in a area with excellent O2 coverage and with poor Tmobile and 3 coverage. I also live in a area where Orange and Vodafone have poor to average coverage so I very much doubt I will be jumping ship anytime soon. Of course it depends where you use your phone and if you use data but for me O2 are the best network for my needs.

Not sure where people can move to. O2 have been the only network offering 'free' MMS. All others charge per message.

Data costs etc. are all being limited on all networks.

O2 appear to be bringing their costing inline with other networks rather than putting them higher.

I know a guy who works for Voda and he admitted they can't match O2 and Voda charge 36p per MMS.

I am still getting MMS included in my 1200 SMS which suits me better than moving to the new tariffs with unlimited text but expensive MMS which O2 were the last to move to. Unless you are a heavy user of MMS it's not a big deal

Basically you're forced to stay with them, even as over time they gimp your tariff.

Theyre scum with awful customer care too.

Like you, I'm stuck with them for a while.

How am I stuck with O2 ? You can't have read the post you have quoted as I am on a 30 day SIM which means I could cancel at 30 days notice

Also they do not change your Tariffs unless you want to renew your deal.

I find your comment that O2 customer care is awful to be the opposite of my experience and don't forget O2 have beaten the other networks for customer support in independent surveys.

I would love verification of this, I use MMS a lot and this will result in me spending more. not happy at all, going to ring them now.

well I have just spent 44 minutes on the phone to O2, few issues were highlighted.

first - I upgraded to the iphone4 in store and was NOT told that MMS would become chargable
second - I have continued to recieve free MMS as per my previous contracts by ERROR
third - <24 hours notice for a change that will leave me worse off is unacceptable.

I didn't get anywhere with the CS lady although she was very helpful, however we have went over the terms and they do state MMS are chargable at 20ppm. I can live with that, what I am annoyed about is the mis-selling of the contract in the first place, I was never made aware of the change to MMS charging (I have always recieved them as part of my bundle), the CS rep agreed this was unfair, the fact O2 have mistakingly not charged me for MMS which has mislead me into believing my MMS was indeed free (again, never told of any promotional period or similar) and the lack of notice to a change to my contract.

I have referred them to section 8.4(c) of the terms which states:

8.4 You may end this Agreement by giving us written notice if:
(a) we break this Agreement in any material way and we do not correct the situation within 7 days of receipt of your written request;
(b) we go into liquidation or a Receiver is appointed over our assets; or
(c) you are a Consumer Customer and we increase charges by more than 10% for calls, messages or data that form part of your inclusive allowance or your
Line Rental Charges or change this Agreement to your significant disadvantage in accordance with paragraph 9.2 of the General Terms, provided you give
us a minimum of 30 days’ written notice (and provided you notify us within one month of our telling you about the changes). This does not apply where:
(i) the increase or change relates solely to Additional Services in which case you may cancel, or stop using, that Additional Service;
(ii) the increase does not exceed the Retail Price Index (“RPI”) figure in any twelve month period; or
(iii) the increase or change is as a result of a requirement by a government or competent regulatory body. For the avoidance of doubt this shall include
any increase in VAT or the imposition of a similar or new tax on the Service or us.

The CS rep agrees that I have not recieved fair treatment and that this change, from what was communicated to me and from the evidence in my past few bills is very close to this above clause, this said she was not in a position to approve a termination on these grounds and as such has passed this to her manager who will now go over the details and hopefully get back to me.

I have made it clear that whilst I am willing to accept MMS are chargable, I feel O2 have breeched term 8.4(c) by failing to inform me of this charge when I signed my contract, failing to charge me for the last 4 months and failing to give me reasonable notice of a change that is going to cost me more money.

I now am waiting for a return call from the manager to see where we can go from here but I am persuing termintation of the contract.

I will keep you informed.

Was your tariff changed to unlimited text when you upgraded? If so then you lost MMS in bundle back then. If not then you still have it.

MMS has been free on iOS4 until now. That would not have been as per your previous contract.

yeah it changed to unlimited texts which i was not so fussed about but the guy in the shop said i had no choice, either change to the new tariff or dont upgrade. never mentioned mms charges tho and given they have been free until now i was mislead into believing they were still free.

meh, im not hugely bothered about the extra costs its the lack of notice and the mis selling in the first place that i am persuing

So you signed a 18 or 24 month contract & didn't read the T&C ?

Yes but you say other networks are crap so you have no option to change.

Anyway I was alerted to yet MORE skimping by O2.

So far we have:

Data no longer unlimited
Texts no longer unlimited via the bolt on
MMS no longer counted in your monthly text allowance

Today I was texted saying BlueBook will no longer save my texts (it's practically the main use of BlueBook). . .unless I send every text I want to save to a special number so in effect send every text twice.

Bravo O2. . . what next. . .my free monthly minutes allowance no longer counts towards voicecalls?

A joke outfit.

.
I have the option to leave O2 but why would I
I still have unlimited data, free MMS
I like O2 because they are strong in the areas I live and visit and also because of the great CS.

But I like a good deal as much as the next man so with being on a SIM free deal for a while now I recently checked out other SIM free deals on offer for i phone.

Vodafone charges 60p for video message and 36p for MMS. These are included in my O2 deal for £5 a month less than Vodafone.

Orange charge 50p for video messages and 30p for MMS these are included in my O2 deal for £5 a month less than Orange.

Orange offer 500mb and Vodafone 1gig data . O2 give me unlimited data. Again for £5 a month less than Orange and Vodafone.

3 and Tmobile are rubbish where I live and are a joke anyway.

Soundburst you may well be stuck with O2 but I very much doubt you could get a better deal elsewhere and are just grumpy because you stupidly didn't read the T&C of your contract. They saw you coming

While it appears on the surface that they've dropped all these things, they were simply things that no other network offered to begin with.

It doesn't make them a joke outfit bringing themselves in line with the rest of the industry.

IMO, their approach to data compared to the other networks is one of the best.

I got a message this morning saying:

O2: We recently sent you a text about your picture messages. Sorry, we shouldn't have sent you this. Any picture messages you send from 29 October will come out of your monthly allowance as normal. Once this is used up, they'll be charged at your normal rate. To find out more, visit o2.co.uk/iphonemms
Perhaps they were bombarded with angry customers for being an increasingly pathetic network and have altered their plans?
